Ecovyst Director of Health and Safety

Scope Of Role

The Director of Health and Safety for Ecovyst is responsible for (1) developing, implementing, supporting and continuous improving the Health, Safety and Wellness Vision, Mission, Policies, Procedures and Training to assure compliance with Ecovyst requirements and applicable OSHA, EPA and applicable state and local regulations, and (2) directing and leading the activities of the site Health and Safety Specialists and the Wellness Coordinator by assigning tasks, approving expense reports, setting individual goals and objectives and evaluating annual performance. Must be able to effectively communicate 360 degrees at both union and non-union sites to effectively implement the Ecovyst corporate Vision, Mission, and Strategies regarding all elements of Health, Safety and Wellness. This position will also require extensive collaboration with all site managers & their leadership teams, the corporate executive leadership team, the operations team and other functional groups such as Environmental & Sustainability, HR, Commercial, Engineering, Technical Team, as well as the embedded and project specific contractors used throughout our facilities.

The preference is for this position is to be located within the Gulf Coast area.

Essential Job Functions

  • Analyze the work environment as well as incident trends to develop programs designed to reduce, mitigate, or eliminate and prevent occupational disease and/or injury and/or environmental harm in the workplace, include those caused by physical, chemical, biological agents or ergonomic factors. Must be able to align these with the organization’s requirements to maintain consistency across the network of sites within Ecovyst.
  • Provide technical support to front line, site leadership, and Ecovyst HQ on matters related to occupational safety, health and wellness.
  • Conduct occupational health, safety and wellness audits and risk assessments as appropriate (i.e., aspect/impact analysis, pre-startup safety reviews, etc.) and prioritize/recommend and monitor and ensure implementation of risk reduction and mitigation measures.
  • Conduct field and site inspections and audits to enforce adherence to laws, regulations and Ecovyst policies governing occupational safety and health compliance.
  • Prepare reports for use by company personnel and regulatory agencies. Ensure safety and health support services to plant operations.
  • Develop and manage initiatives to promote a proactive health, safety and wellness culture, including processes designed to increase employee involvement, education and recognition by participation in safety committees, incident investigations training, occupational health matters, compliance auditing and site and corporate wellness initiatives.
  • Upward report and interpret injury data to identify trends and/or causal factors, such as behavioral factors, system failure, incomplete or faulty decision-making or a weakness in existing policies or practices or regulations.
  • Liaise with regulatory agencies on matters related to reporting and/or investigating health and safety compliance concerns.
  • Lead the development and delivery of training required by law in connection with health and safety.
  • On an as-needed basis, participate in and provide support for select Pre-Startup Safety Reviews (PSSRs) prior to startup of new or modified processes or equipment or after extended shutdown of equipment. Periodically review site PSSRs in conjunction with larger team to check for quality and completeness.
  • Provide support for Process Safety Event investigations/root cause analyses on an as needed basis. In conjunction with site management teams and HS Specialists, track progress of corrective actions where business wide issues are identified.
  • Work with the Corporation’s outsourced security provider in conducting Site Vulnerability Assessments (SVAs) on an as needed/requested basis.
  • Support plants where interface is required with local regulatory agencies as it related to Health and Safety.
  • Regularly consult with other internal / external experts and best practices outside Ecovyst within their region/business (e.g., benchmark what we are doing with respect to others, learn from best practices in the process industry and understanding trends).
  • Monitor regulatory changes, publicly available information, and significant incidents at refineries/chemical plants, etc. for the Corporation.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering required. Preferred discipline in Chemical or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Minimum of 15 years plant experience with a broad technical understanding of plant operations.
  • Relationship building abilities with regulatory community and external public interest/community groups a must.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, influence operations, and build consensus opinions. Strong leadership/change agency skills are a must.
  • Detailed knowledge of US OSHA and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Experience w/ Industrial Hygiene Programs, Health and Wellness Programs, and Occupational Health Programs.
  • Travel to plants/sites within North America. Travel is estimated at 25%.
