What are the responsibilities and job description for the Exhibit Technician position at EcoTarium?
The Exhibit Technician is responsible for the maintenance, repair, fabrication, and installation of exhibits and related signage across the EcoTarium campus. This hands-on role ensures that all exhibit components, particularly interactive elements, are clean, fully functional, safe, and aligned with high standards for the visitor experience. Working collaboratively with the Exhibits, Facilities, and Education Teams, this position supports the lifecycle of exhibits from delivery and installation through ongoing maintenance, upgrades, and de-installation and shipping.
Essential Functions:
- Conduct daily walkthroughs of exhibit spaces while cleaning to assess functionality, cleanliness, lighting, and overall condition.
- Troubleshoot and repair interactive, mechanical, electrical, and audio-visual exhibit components and consult with Exhibit Specialists as needed.
- Perform preventative maintenance to ensure exhibits remain operational and safe for public use.
- Review and contribute to documentation of exhibit components and preventive maintenance guidelines.
- Representing the Museum, serve as a visible, approachable presence on the museum floor, actively engaging with guests visiting the exhibits, answering questions, and modeling appropriate interactive use while informally monitoring exhibit interactions and conditions.
- Spend approximately 75% of each hour in public-facing spaces, balancing guest engagement with real-time observation of exhibit functionality, safety, and visitor behavior and repair/maintenance.
- Maintain exhibit spaces to museum standards, including daily cleaning of all cases, replacing materials, and ensuring high-touch elements are sanitized every hour.
- Assist in the fabrication, installation, and deinstallation of permanent and temporary exhibits, including off-loading trucks, unloading crates, mounting graphics, labels, and structural elements.
- Utilize hand and power tools to construct, assemble, and modify exhibit components based on design plans, and document all activities.
- Monitor and adjust exhibit lighting and environmental conditions as needed and as prescribed by exhibit contracts and guidelines.
- Maintain inventory of tools, materials, and exhibit supplies; communicate needs for restocking to the Exhibit Manager, and clean all tools before storing.
- Document maintenance, repairs, and exhibit issues; communicate updates to leadership.
- Ensure all work is completed in accordance with safety standards and museum best practices.
- Use personal protective equipment when needed per OSHA guidelines for workplace safety.
- Consistently demonstrate safety behaviors and proper use of ladders, lifts and equipment, including requesting safety time-outs when necessary.
- Maintain, install, inspect, and repair outdoor play equipment and exhibit interactives, and the performance stage. Communicate with the Grounds Team when site work or electrical work is needed.
- Inspect and replace consumables when they appear worn, or broken, or uncleanable, or pose a safety risk. Maintain an inventory of consumables to allow for timely replacement.
- Ensure that exhibit elements on the floor of the Museum are in working order and presentable for public use, and when elements break and have unanticipated down-time, ensure adequate public signage is put in place immediately and develop an immediate plan to repair or replace elements as needed. Document exhibit down time.
- Maintain a clean working environment and contribute to cleanliness when issues are identified. Every team member is responsible for overall Museum cleanliness.
Essential Periodic Functions
- Assist with packing, crating, and transporting exhibit components or materials.
- Support setup and breakdown for programs, events, and rentals requiring exhibit or gallery adjustments.
- Contribute to small-scale exhibit improvements, upgrades, or prototyping efforts.
- Assist with installation, maintenance, and breakdown of outdoor exhibit elements, sculptures, or seasonal exhibits and interactives as needed; and animal habitats in coordination with the Zoo Team.
- Provide general support to facilities or operations teams during large projects.
- Other duties as needed and assigned by management.
Qualifications:
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, exhibit design, fabrication, or a related field, or equivalent hands-on experience (2–3 years preferred).
- Experience with carpentry, basic electrical work, AV systems, or mechanical systems.
- Ability to read and interpret design drawings, schematics, or installation plans.
- Proficiency with hand and power tools and general fabrication techniques.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Physical ability to stand, walk, lift, and perform manual tasks as required.
- Friendly demeanor and strong interpersonal skills
- Physical ability to lift up to 60 lbs., stand for extended periods, and perform repetitive movements such as bending, lifting, and reaching
- Willingness to work a flexible schedule, including holidays, weekends, and late evening and overnight coverage.
- Must pass CORI, SORI, and background checks to EcoTarium’s guidelines.
- Must complete OSHA 10 training (provided).
