Position Summary
The Interstate Operations Manager leads all long-distance (interstate) moving operations, ensuring efficient execution, regulatory compliance, and a high-quality customer experience. This role is responsible for driving performance across dispatch, fleet utilization, labor management, and cost control, while supporting aggressive growth in interstate revenue. This position requires direct experience in the moving and storage industry.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee all interstate moving operations, including dispatch, scheduling, routing, and load planning
- Manage driver and crew assignments to maximize utilization, efficiency, and on-time delivery
- Coordinate cross-branch operations to support long-distance capacity and nationwide coverage
- Ensure compliance with all applicable federal and state regulations, including Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) standards
- Monitor Hours of Service (HOS), driver logs, and safety performance across interstate operations
- Drive cost control initiatives, including labor efficiency, fuel management, and vendor performance
- Collaborate with sales to align booked revenue with operational capacity and execution
- Implement and refine SOPs specific to interstate household goods (HHG) moves
- Resolve escalated service issues, claims situations, and operational breakdowns
- Lead and develop operations staff, drivers, and field leadership
Regulatory & Compliance Oversight
- Maintain full compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration regulations and DOT requirements
- Enforce company safety policies and incident response procedures
- Oversee shipment documentation, bill of lading accuracy, and claims mitigation processes
Financial & Operational Performance
- Optimize routing, linehaul efficiency, backhauls, and load consolidation
- Support pricing strategy with real operational cost insight
- Identify and execute process improvements to increase scalability and margin
Leadership & Team Development
- Build and lead a high-performance interstate operations team
- Set clear expectations and hold team accountable to KPIs and service standards
- Partner with HR on recruiting, onboarding, and retention of drivers and operations staff
- Promote a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement
Required Qualifications (Non-Negotiable)
- 3 years of experience in the moving and storage industry (household goods required)
- Direct experience with interstate/long-distance moving operations
- Strong working knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations and DOT compliance
- Proven experience managing dispatch and multi-state operations
- Demonstrated ability to manage P&L performance and operational KPIs
- Experience with claims management and valuation processes
- Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with van line operations or independent interstate authority
- Multi-branch operational oversight experience
- Background in scaling a growing interstate division
- Experience with HHG shipment lifecycle (estimate → load → transit → delivery → claims)
