Job Summary
The Clinical Laboratory Medical Technologist – General Laboratory is responsible for performing moderate and high-complexity clinical laboratory testing with accuracy, efficiency, and strict adherence to regulatory and quality standards. This role supports continuous laboratory operations by ensuring timely and reliable test results across core disciplines, including chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and immunology. The Clinical Laboratory Medical technologist plays a critical role in maintaining workflow efficiency, supporting clinical trials testing needs as applicable, and upholding Eccolab Group’s commitment to patient safety, regulatory compliance, and operational excellence.
Scope
This position provides dedicated second-shift coverage for the General Laboratory and is accountable for maintaining testing continuity, turnaround times, and operational stability during assigned hours. The role functions within established laboratory frameworks, following approved methodologies, instrumentation protocols, and quality systems. The Clinical Laboratory Technologist operates with a high level of technical accountability, contributing to workload distribution, shift-to-shift handoffs, and compliance readiness, while supporting departmental staffing balance and minimizing cross-departmental resource dependency.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities
- Perform moderate and high-complexity testing in the General Laboratory in accordance with approved methodologies, regulatory requirements, and laboratory policies.
- Perform clinical laboratory testing including hematology, coagulation, urinalysis, immunology, and clinical chemistry.
- Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing based on established criteria and testing requirements.
- ·Perform routine and complex technical procedures in compliance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
- Operate, monitor, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments to ensure accurate and reliable performance.
- Demonstrate sound technical judgment when making testing decisions and resolving technical or procedural issues.
- Prepare, test, and evaluate reagents, calibrators, and quality control materials prior to use.
- Analyze, verify, and report accurate and timely test results through the laboratory information system.
- Perform and document quality control activities, calibrations, and preventive maintenance in accordance with laboratory standards.
- Identify, investigate, and document testing deviations, instrument issues, and quality variances, including corrective actions taken.
- Identify and promptly escalate critical values in accordance with laboratory policy and escalation protocols.
- Adhere to chain-of-custody, specimen handling, and documentation requirements throughout the testing process.
- Manage reagent and supply inventory to ensure adequate availability and uninterrupted testing operations.
- Maintain a safe work environment by complying with all laboratory safety policies, infection control procedures, and proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Support shift handoffs by communicating pending work, issues, and critical information to incoming staff.
- Participate in proficiency testing, competency assessments, inspections, audits, and corrective action initiatives as required.
- Maintain strict confidentiality of patient information in compliance with HIPAA and company policy.
- Maintain regulatory readiness by adhering to CLIA, COLA, OSHA, and internal quality management requirements.
Qualifications
- Associate or bachelor’s degree, or foreign equivalent, in Clinical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, Biological Sciences, or a closely related scientific field.
- Active and unrestricted State of Florida Clinical Laboratory Technologist license, appropriate to the testing performed.
- Current ASCP, AMT, or AAB Medical Technologist / Medical Laboratory Scientist certification.
- Mid to Senior-level candidates meeting licensure and certification required.
- 3-6 years clinical laboratory experience.
- Prior experience in a high-volume or multi-discipline clinical laboratory environment is preferred.
- Must meet CLIA requirements to perform moderate and high-complexity testing.
- Ability to maintain all required licenses and certifications in good standing as a condition of employment.
