Position Responsibilities:
The Datacenter Critical Facilities Engineer will ensure the safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of crucial building infrastructure systems in a high-availability datacenter environment. Key responsibilities will include:
- Act as the on-site engineer responsible for infrastructure operations, performing manual interventions and safe resets during after-hours incidents to prevent cascading outages.
- Operate, monitor, and maintain complex datacenter systems including electrical distribution, HVAC, chilled water, power supply, UPS units, generators, and associated monitoring or control equipment.
- Respond promptly to both scheduled and emergency maintenance across all electrical and mechanical building systems, including HVAC, power distribution units, and electrical panels.
- Diagnose and address equipment malfunctions, initiating and executing corrective actions to maintain or restore normal operation.
- Safely perform routine and corrective electrical maintenance following established safety protocols such as Lockout/Tagout (LOTO), including main breaker resets and system shutdowns.
- Monitor and enforce compliance with all relevant safety regulations (federal, state, and local), including those issued by OSHA, EPA, and NFPA, as well as supporting hazardous materials management, recycling, and confined space procedures.
- Serve as the primary liaison for third-party service providers, oversee vendor activities, and ensure quality and coordination in all vendor-performed repairs or service calls.
- Engage in facility upgrade or maintenance projects, including requirements gathering, equipment replacement, installation, and proper asset management throughout lifecycles.
- Provide ongoing support to infrastructure operations both during standard business hours and outside of regular hours, including nights, weekends, and in emergency situations.
- Lead or assist in the resolution of emergent technical issues, effectively escalating and coordinating with management and leadership when necessary.
Essential Skills, Experience
To excel in this role, candidates should demonstrate the following abilities and background:
- Minimum 5 years of experience working in datacenter facilities operations or a critical infrastructure environment.
- At least 1 year of direct, hands-on experience operating around electrical distribution panels, including the safe operation of breakers and interpretation of electrical schematics.
- Practical knowledge and firsthand experience with one or more building infrastructure systems (HVAC, UPS, backup generators, PDUs).
- Proven expertise in evaluating power requirements, supporting hardware installations, and overseeing equipment move, replacement, and decommissioning tasks.
- Strong working knowledge of datacenter security, safety, environmental controls, and smart building management systems.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to convey technical concepts clearly to vendors, building leadership, and stakeholders.
- Superior time management, multitasking, and prioritization abilities to address both recurring and urgent facility needs.
- Consistent reliability, punctuality, and readiness to respond to scheduled and unscheduled situations as required.
- Self-motivated with a strong work ethic, able to operate independently and with minimal supervision.
Qualifications:
- Ability to pass a federal background investigation and obtain a Public Trust clearance.
- Proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English.
- Ability to interface professionally with government personnel and contract leadership as needed.
