Job Title: SQL Server Database Administrator
Location: Columbus, OH (Hybrid)
Job Overview:
The Department of Children and Youth (DCY), Office of Information Services (OIS), is seeking an experienced SQL Server Database Administrator to drive high-caliber database design, solution delivery, and support in a fast-paced and collaborative environment. The successful candidate will be an influential technical leader with deep database expertise and a collaborative style that promotes innovation and operational excellence.
Responsibilities:
- Manage Microsoft SQL Server database environments, including SQL Server virtual machine (VM) servers.
- Ensure best practices in database planning, design, configuration, performance, capacity planning, and growth.
- Collaborate with database administrators across different agencies managing platforms such as Azure Cloud and Oracle.
- Support SQL-based application migration to the Azure Cloud environment.
- Provide DBA support for distributed servers in a multi-datacenter environment.
- Monitor daily activities and performance of complex SQL environments, analyze technical problems, recommend and implement solutions.
- Provide technical assistance to application development teams regarding SQL design and programming.
- Configure SQL services (e.g., security, JDBC, clusters); plan, install, and coordinate SQL Server releases, migrations, upgrades, and maintenance.
- Build new environments as required to support applications.
- Coordinate with network, IIS administrators, and storage teams for SQL Server configurations.
- Develop technical documents, project plans, and tasks; interact with customers for proposed solutions.
- Provide support for non-production and production deployments; troubleshoot and resolve application issues.
- Support DevOps tools such as Ansible, Jenkins, Nexus, Maven, Bitbucket, Kony Mobile, and Nginx.
- Perform additional tasks as assigned by management based on project/application needs.
- Provide Tier III technical support and develop project plans in coordination with project managers.
- Lead meetings related to design, implementation, operation, and maintenance of database systems.
- Design and plan cluster nodes, configure/set up clusters, interconnects, and cluster-aware storage; install DBMS software on all nodes.
- Monitor load balancing and tune cluster parameters; configure standby servers.
- Configure and implement log shipping and replication.
- Provide technical leadership to foster database innovation and promote automation.
- Support strategic planning for database architecture, resource management, and capacity planning.
- Ensure resilience and performance through best practices in database management.
- Evaluate and propose improvements to database design and processes for optimization.
- Identify and resolve inefficiencies in current database designs.
- Plan and implement resource expansion for scalability.
- Implement risk management controls and ensure compliance with regulations.
- Lead incident resolution efforts and coordinate corrective actions.
- Conduct research and provide recommendations on database products, services, protocols, and standards.
- Support virtualized infrastructure running on Unix, Linux, and AIX systems.
- Modify storage structures to meet organizational needs.
- Regularly update database security protocols and apply patches.
- Provide leadership and guidance to junior team members.
- Collaborate with project management to ensure timely and effective client communication during deployments and upgrades.
