Description
Support product development and operations in the machining and assembly of prototype and production devices, tools, and equipment.
Essential duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Proficient in CNC programming. Setup and operate a variety of CNC and conventional machining equipment (e.g. Haas, Fanuc, knee mill, toolroom lathe, bandsaw, surface grinder, tool setter).
- Machine and assemble prototype components and devices, fixtures, tooling, equipment and other designs according to engineering drawings/specifications and/or verbal instructions.
- Develop production machining processes and work flows. Plan, layout, assess, and implement machining strategies for optimal spindle use and material stock size, and minimized tool wear/break to maximize output and yield.
- Perform all calculations of material, select proper cutting tools, and determine speeds and feeds for optimal performance.
- Setup and use precision measuring tools, and check own work for conformance to specifications.
- Evaluate quality of work and employ changes for continuous improvement.
- Actively work to minimize scrap and waste.
- Design fixtures and jigs to facilitate fabrication of complex machined components.
- Maintain accurate records/documentation related to quality, procedures, work in process, test results, measurements, labor, and special projects.
- Maintain equipment, tools, supplies, safety, cleanliness, and organization of the machine shop. Schedule and oversee preventative maintenance, service, and repairs.
- Evaluate, select, and purchase machine shop equipment, tooling, and supplies. Work with suppliers to obtain price quotes. Coordinate equipment rigging and installation.
- Collaborate with product development staff in the design and fabrication of devices and machines. Review engineering drawings/specifications and/or electronic models to determine optimal manufacturing methods.
- Collaborate with cross-functional groups (e.g. supply chain, quality, engineering) to support commercial operations.
- Complete projects in an aggressive manner consistent with corporate objectives. Proactively communicates delays in project completion to management.
- Demonstrated ability to recruit, hire, and retain skilled technicians and machinists capable of operating both CNC and non-CNC equipment.
- Provides structured coaching, regular feedback, and development plans that enable team members to progressively increase their technical capability, efficiency, and overall impact on fabrication and production needs.
- In partnership with supervisors, the individual designs, proposes, and continuously improves fabrication workflows that optimize intake prioritization, cross-functional collaboration, throughput, and clear closure of requests across R&D, Production, and other stakeholders.
- Comfortable selecting, implementing, and using software tools (e.g., work request systems, scheduling tools, dashboards) that enable transparent communication, workload balancing, and predictable execution.
- Experienced in managing fabrication workflows with clear schedules, status reporting, and delivery commitments that stakeholders can rely on, even under shifting priorities.
- Acts as a value-added partner to R&D, Production, and Marketing by translating their needs into manufacturable, timely, and well-communicated fabrication solutions rather than operating as a purely reactive shop. I.e. Is capable of influencing designs for the better.
- Ability to make explicit, well-communicated trade-offs when demand exceeds capacity, balancing urgency, business impact, and resource constraints, rather than attempting to satisfy all requests equally.
- Contribute to the intellectual property position of the company by maintaining accurate documentation of concepts, designs, drawings, and processes.
- Support company goals and objectives, policies and procedures, good manufacturing practices, and FDA regulations.
- Maintain a professional, credible image with co-workers, consultants, and suppliers.
Other Duties and Responsibilities

- Work all required overtime.
Supervisory Responsibilities
- Manage machine shop personnel as required.
Education and Required Experience
- AA or equivalent in machine technology preferred.
- 12 years related experience with CNC machining preferably in the medical device industry.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Proficient with Mastercam, Surfcam, or equivalent software.
- Experience with 3 and 4-axis programming. Experience with 5-axis programming is a plus.
- Familiarity with SolidWorks is preferred.
- Must be able to read and interpret blueprints, sketches, and designs.
- Fluency and good communication skills in English.
Physical Requirements
- Required to stand, walk and sit; talk or hear; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms.
- Required to stoop, kneel, bend, crouch and lift up to 40 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, color vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Subject to extended periods of sitting and/or standing, vision to monitor, and moderate noise levels.
Compensation & Benefits
$71.63 per hour - $86.06 per hour*
*Base pay is one part of your total compensation. The salary offered will depend on several factors, including, but not limited to your experience, knowledge, skills, location, internal equity, and market alignment. Addition compensation may include bonuses and equity, along with a comprehensive benefits package.
