The Position
Highly skilled professionals with experience in manual machine tool operation are invited to apply for East Bay Municipal Utility District’s (EBMUD’s) Maintenance Machinist position. Maintenance Machinists work both in the shop and field performing highly skilled mechanical maintenance, manual machining, repair fabrication, and installation work on a variety of industrial plant equipment such as pumps, electric motors, valves, plumbing systems, and related mechanical equipment. The work requires considerable independent judgment.
The primary responsibilities will be manual machining unique replacement parts, troubleshooting, repair and maintenance of pumps, pressure regulators, water isolation valves, and all other mechanical equipment located in the pumping plants and other facilities. The position also supports construction projects through shop fabrication and field installation of distribution water system and building components.
NOTE: EBMUD's Maintenance Machinists are not comparable to CNC Machine Operator or Production Machinist positions with most firms.
Ideal candidates are skilled, journey-level Manual Machinists with shop and field experience.

- Setting up and operating manual machine tools (lathe, key-seater, grinder, horizontal boring mill, etc.)
- Diagnosing and repairing mechanical problems
- Performing field and shop welding, rigging, and fitting, and preventive maintenance
- Using measuring instruments, layout tools and diagnostic equipment with accuracy and precision
- Preparing drawings and sketches
- May direct work of others as needed

Requirements
- A high school diploma or its equivalent AND
- a. Sixteen months’ experience comparable to East Bay Municipal Utility District (EBMUD’s) Machining and Maintenance Worker III classification, including satisfactory completion of the appropriate courses and advanced on-the-job training, as specified in EBMUD’s Maintenance Trades Training Program for Maintenance Machinists; OR
- Must possess a valid California driver’s license and have a satisfactory driving record.
- Must possess the physical characteristics to perform the critical and important duties of the class. Must be willing to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and work overtime as needed. May be required to be clean shaven on a scheduled basis as required to wear respiratory protection equipment.
The Selection Process
- Submit a completed EBMUD application and the required supplemental question responses online at www.ebmud.com by 4:30 p.m., Friday, April 10, 2026. Only application materials submitted online during the filing period will be accepted.
- Candidates must achieve a passing score on each test part in order to advance to the next step in the selection process.
- All qualified applications and supplemental responses will be competitively evaluated, with those candidates demonstrating the strongest qualifications for the position to be invited to a written test, followed by a performance test. The performance test is a hands-on shop test that will specifically measure and evaluate candidates' skill in manual lathe and mill operation to close tolerances (.001) including single point threading.
- Successful candidates will be placed on the hiring list, based on rank, for further consideration to fill the current regular vacancy, as well as others occurring over the next 12 to 24 months.
- The probation period for this position is 12 months. For those holding civil service status the probation period is 6 months.
- All employment offers are conditional, pending the results of a Live Scan background screening. All selected finalists must participate in the Live Scan background screening process to remain in consideration for EBMUD employment.
