Primary Purpose:
Delivers programs and specialized services that address student emotional, social, and behavioral needs in the academic setting. Provides services including crisis intervention, short-term individual counseling, group counseling and other direct or indirect services to students and families. Works to enhance student emotional, social, and behavioral performance and participation in the educational environment.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in counseling or similar from an accredited college or university
- School counselor certification (preferred)
- LCDC, LPC, LMSW, or LCSW (preferred)
- Demonstrates ability to build effective relationships with students and family members
- Capacity to effectively present awareness programs to students, parents, and staff
- Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal
- Knowledge of individual and group counseling skills
- Knowledge of prevention and intervention strategies
- Awareness and ability to access community resources
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Guidance:
- Provides group activities that encourage personal and social
- Organizes and facilitates workshops and seminars for parents and
- Develops and implements appropriate awareness programs. (i.e.: alcohol, drugs, suicide, bullying)
- Leads, coordinates, and/or facilitates prevention activities that promote a healthy, safe, substance free life for
- Assists in the implementation of prevention related curriculum to be delivered to students in classrooms or advisory
- Assists teachers in the teaching of prevention-related curriculum
Responsive Services:
- Provides individual and group counseling to students who are experiencing emotional, social or physical
- Provides counseling services to individuals or groups on a systematic basis as appropriate.
- Provides counseling support services to students returning to school from disciplinary settings such as DAEP, JJAEP or
- Provides counseling support services to students returning to school from hospital settings for mental health related
- Participates actively in the process for referral of students to school/district special program and/or
- Provides information to students, parents and school staff on outside resources for assistance with emotional and social
- Assists campus guidance counselors with intervention/crisis support of at-risk students.
- Advocates for students with parents, school staff and outside service providers and agencies.
- Acts as the District/school liaison with outside agencies assisting students with emotional and social problems outside the school
System Support:
- Analyzes data to make recommendations to campus and district administration on prevention
- Requests budgetary expenditures in accordance with intervention counseling program
- Compiles, maintains and files all required physical and computerized reports, records and other
- Participates in and/or provides programming for enhancing the school
- Participates as a member of the district crisis team
- Positively supports campus and/or district-wide
