What are the responsibilities and job description for the Juvenile Probation Officer position at Eaton County?
Under supervision of the Attorney Referee/Division Director, and other supervisory personnel, performs casework for the Eaton County Trial Court-Family Division. Investigates and gathers information on the background of youth and families to assist the court in determining the most appropriate disposition of juvenile cases. Provides oversight to ensure agreements and court orders are followed. Develops and oversees treatment goals for the monitoring and supervision of youth to modify, eliminate and rehabilitate delinquent behaviors. May assume responsibility for treatment specific caseload or programing.
Starting pay is dependent on an applicant's relevant experience.

- Performs information gathering of youth and their families to develop and prepare pre-dispositional reports and recommendations.
- Develops and implements individualized treatment plans for juveniles designed to meet short and long-term rehabilitative goals. Monitors and evaluates progress and modifies plans to meet need changes.
- Supervises juveniles placed on informal agreements and those placed on formal probation. Performs regular home and school visits within the community and meets with youth and families for regular office visits.
- Provides support to youth and families on a variety of emotional, psychological and behavioral issues. May serve a caseload specific population such as truancy, sex offenders, substance abuse or youth participating in specific court ordered programming.
- Recommends and conducts referrals to service agencies, community organizations and programming based on identified needs of a youth during crisis situations and in compliance with court recommendations and orders. Maintains regular contact while monitoring a youth’s compliance and progress.
- Regularly attends court hearings and provides testimony. Files motions and violations based on non-compliance and recommends dispositional alternatives for court consideration.
- Responsible for performing, implementing and/or ensuring mental health and risk screening and assessment tools are being performed. Ensures screening and assessment scores are documented and provided to the court for consideration on each juvenile case.
- Responsible for the installation of electronic monitoring and the collection of samples or specimens to test for alcohol or substance abuse.
- May be responsible for the transportation of youth to court hearings, counseling appointments, doctor appointments, school and other locations as necessary.
- Maintains documented case notes on all contacts made with each juvenile and family. Ensure compliance with Juvenile Justice Probation Standards and that file documents meet auditing requirements.
- May serve as facilitator of parenting or other educational programming implemented by the court, including leading coursework and gathering evaluative data.
- Attend seminars, educational training and local meetings related to Juvenile Justice. May represent the Juvenile Court for presentations, mentoring and training related to local programming and practices.
- May be responsible for coordinating routine maintenance and repairs for court vehicles to ensure safety standards.

Education: Bachelor's Degree or equivalent in social work, criminal justice, education, behavioral sciences, or a related field that qualifies the person to manage or supervise the delivery of juvenile services.
Experience: Two years of casework experience in juvenile court or a related child welfare agency is desired.
Knowledge and Abilities: Knowledge of delinquency matters, the juvenile justice system and children’s services programs, as well as the effects of social conditions on family functioning. Ability to apply social casework methods to working with youth and families.
Other Requirements: Completion of the Michigan Judicial Institute certification training for juvenile court staff – required within two years after date of employment.
Valid Michigan Driver's license and a good driving record.
Ability to serve in an on-call rotation capacity for after-hours juvenile delinquency matters.
FLSA Status: Exempt.
