Job summary

Safely and efficiently operate a commercial truck with specialized trailers (e.g., flatbeds, step-decks, landolls, sideloaders, rollbacks) to transport large containers and heavy-duty forklifts. This role requires careful adherence to all transportation laws, superior cargo securement, and a strong commitment to safety and timely delivery. The driver will be responsible for local or regional routes, with a focus on delivering equipment to ports, rail yards, warehouses, and construction sites.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

Vehicle operation and maintenance

• Safely operate heavy-duty trucks with various trailer types, such as flatbeds, step-decks, or intermodal chassis.
• Perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle and trailer, including checks of tires, lights, brakes, and fluid levels.
• Conduct basic maintenance, such as refueling, cleaning, and reporting any mechanical issues to maintenance personnel.
  
  

Load handling and securement

• Load and unload containers and forklifts, often with the use of specialized lifting devices and by coordinating with on-site staff.
• Properly secure all cargo for transport using chains, binders, straps, and other equipment according to company policy and all Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
• Verify the accuracy and condition of the load before and after transit.
  
  

Safety and compliance

• Follow all federal, state, and local traffic laws and regulations, including hours-of-service limits.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date electronic logging device (ELD) records and other required paperwork.
• Practice a safety-first mindset at all times to prevent accidents and ensure the well-being of all parties.
  
  

Route planning and communication

• Plan efficient routes using GPS and specialized software to meet delivery schedules.
• Communicate with dispatchers regarding route changes, delays, incidents, or mechanical problems.
• Effectively communicate with customers and on-site managers during pickup and delivery.
  
  

Qualifications

• Education: High school diploma or GED equivalent.
• License: A valid CDL Class A license is required.
• Experience: A minimum of 2 years of commercial driving experience, with proven experience in specialized hauling of containers or heavy equipment.
• Certifications: Forklift operator certification is a plus, and a TWIC card may be required for port access.
• Driving Record: A clean driving record is mandatory.
