Yard Manager

Job Summary

The Metal Recycling Yard Manager oversees the daily operations of a metal recycling facility, ensuring safe, efficient, and environmentally compliant processing of ferrous and non-ferrous metals. This role is responsible for supervising employees, managing inventory, coordinating shipments, maintaining equipment, and delivering excellent customer service while meeting production and profitability goals.

Key Responsibilities

· Manage all daily yard operations, including receiving, sorting, processing, and shipping scrap metal.

· Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate yard personnel, equipment operators, and support staff.

· Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, state, and local environmental and safety regulations.

· Conduct regular safety meetings and enforce company safety policies.

· Monitor inventory levels and maintain accurate records of incoming and outgoing materials.

· Coordinate transportation, shipping, and receiving activities with customers and vendors.

· Inspect materials for quality and proper classification.

· Oversee operation and maintenance of heavy equipment, including loaders, excavators, forklifts, balers, and shears.

· Work with buyers and sales personnel to maximize the value of recycled materials.

· Investigate and resolve customer concerns professionally.

· Prepare operational reports, production data, and performance metrics.

· Manage operating budgets and control labor and equipment costs.

· Ensure the yard remains organized, clean, and environmentally compliant.

· Assist with hiring, disciplinary actions, and employee performance evaluations.

Qualifications

· High school diploma or GED required; associate's or bachelor's degree preferred.

· 3–5 years of experience in metal recycling, scrap processing, manufacturing, or industrial operations.

· Previous supervisory or management experience preferred.

· Strong knowledge of ferrous and non-ferrous metals.

· Familiarity with heavy equipment operation and maintenance.

· Working knowledge of OSHA safety standards and environmental regulations.

· Valid driver's license (CDL preferred but not required).

Work Environment

· Outdoor industrial recycling yard

· Occasional overtime, weekends, and on-call responsibilities as needed

Preferred Certifications

· OSHA 30-Hour General Industry Certification

· Heavy Equipment Operator Certification

· First Aid/CPR Certification
