About the Role:
A Department Head is responsible for providing instructional leadership across relevant subject areas, focusing on studying, evaluating, and implementing research-based curriculum and instruction, and providing leadership in developing, implementing, and improving instructional resources. Department Heads observe and analyze teacher instruction and provide feedback in accordance with the district evaluation tool. Per the contract, Department Heads teach course loads dependent upon the number of teachers they evaluate.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Teacher:
Support all schools as needed
Newcomer strategic support
Academic support (targeted reading instruction)
Push in support in secondary content classes
Support modification of curriculum materials for Tier 1
Resource for general education teachers
ACCESS testing - screenings and annual assessments
Family engagement liaison
Building community
Support ML family participation in school activities
Communication - translation advocacy
SLIFE coordinator
Director:
Supervision & Evaluation
Observe and analyze teacher instruction and provide feedback in accordance with the district evaluation tool.
Oversee collaborative planning sessions to ensure teacher development, and unit development effectively improve student outcomes
Assist the administration in the hiring of teachers within the department.
Assist teachers in the development of growth plans that promote professional growth and student learning
Assist in the orientation and induction of new staff members.
Professional Development
Attend monthly after-school leadership meetings and attend professional development meetings when necessary.
Encourage research, experimentation, and a variety of teaching models, including the integration of educational technology.
With administration, determine the professional development needs of the department.
Communication & Collaboration
Ensure that staff members know how and why key decisions are being made
Assist teachers with welcoming and partnering with parents/caregivers and responding successfully to their concerns when necessary
Celebrate individual, school, and district achievements in English
Model culturally responsive practices that support diverse students, families and staff
Be responsible for channeling information to members of their department/subject area.
Act as a liaison between administration and department/subject area members, disseminating information and various requests.
Consult with the administration (when necessary) on departmental issues and concerns.
Collaborate with the instructional coaches and the EPS Director of Curriculum to ensure alignment of curriculum and instruction
Management & Budget Responsibilities
Oversee and monitor DESE program compliance
Oversee, monitor and support ACCESS screenings and annual assessments
Organize productive meetings that engage all members of the department
Plan for short and long term departmental improvement goals and budgeting
Inventory, evaluate, and order departmental supplies and books and determine and revise the department budget.
Initiate purchase orders and follow up on receipt of the same.
Assist and support substitutes in the department.
Planning & Meeting Facilitation
Assist the school administration with the student placement, overrides and add/drops
Facilitate data-based discussions with teachers to inform instruction.
Be responsible for establishing agendas and supervising contractual meetings and in-service days.
Facilitates sessions with the department on the planning, development, and implementation of UbD
Teaching & Learning
Communicate a vision for improving student learning outcomes and enlist members of the department in achieving that vision
Use data to inform plan for continual departmental improvement
Model best practices for staff members by using student work to inform instruction in the classroom
Job Requirements:
valid DESE teacher licensure in ESL
ability to work with diverse population of learners
knowledge about social justice and equity in the classroom and in pedagogy
knowledge of the WIDA ELD standards and MA Curriculum Frameworks, and demonstrated understanding of best practice in curriculum, instruction, and assessment
knowledge of differentiated instruction and response to intervention
knowledge of the educator evaluation system
ability to create and maintain an environment in which students’ diverse backgrounds, identities, strengths, and challenges are seen and respected
Qualifications:
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work cooperatively with students, staff, and administrators
Strong organizational skills, flexibility, and dependability
Knowledge of backward design process such as Understanding by Design
Five years of previous teaching experience preferred
