Duties
- Safely operate non-commercial vehicles designed for paratransit services, including wheelchair-accessible vans and buses, adhering to all traffic laws and transportation safety regulations.
- Assist passengers with boarding and disembarking, providing wheelchair assistance and ensuring proper use of safety restraints.
- Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including first aid and CPR when necessary, to ensure passenger safety at all times.
- Maintain clear communication with dispatchers and passengers using effective English language skills to coordinate pickups, drop-offs, and respond quickly to traffic changes or route adjustments.
- Conduct pre-trip inspections of vehicles to verify operational safety, including checking vehicle codes, emergency stop procedures, and heavy lifting requirements.
- Manage passenger behavior through positive behavior management techniques while adhering to school policies or senior care protocols as applicable.
- Complete accurate documentation of trips, incidents, and vehicle maintenance logs while demonstrating strong writing skills.
Experience
- Prior experience driving buses or transit vehicles such as school buses or transit buses is highly preferred.
- Demonstrated knowledge of traffic laws, vehicle codes, and transportation safety regulations applicable to non-CDL driving roles.
- Experience working with children or seniors in a transportation setting is advantageous.
- Certification in first aid and CPR is desirable; training will be provided if not already obtained.
- Strong communication skills in English are essential for interacting effectively with passengers and team members.
- Ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting passengers or handling equipment safely.
- Familiarity with student discipline policies or behavior management strategies is beneficial for working with young or special needs passengers.
