Role Profile

The Controls Technician provides expertise in troubleshooting, maintaining and repairs to process and manufacturing instrumentation, motor control systems, PLC and drive systems, electrical distribution systems and more. This role primary functions include, but not limited to: Provide site support for equipment breakdowns/troubleshooting/repair, planned work, preventive maintenance, and capital project assignments.

Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate a high commitment to safety
  • Utilize electrical test equipment properly and safely
  • Troubleshoot/maintain/install a variety of electrical and instrumentation equipment
  • Read and use electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, P&ID drawings for troubleshooting and installation purposes
  • Read and comprehend technical documentation as it pertains to equipment and systems to be maintained or installed
  • Troubleshoot/maintain/install simple and complex motor control systems
  • Manage work order backlog in areas of responsibility
  • Perform ISO calibrations and complete required documentation
  • Perform PM's and complete required documentation
  • Troubleshoot and repair plant support equipment such as but not limited to air compressors, oxidizers, scrubbers, thermal heaters, etc.
  • Install/calibrate/troubleshoot various instrumentation devices such as I/P, E/P, load cell amplifiers, LFL analyzers, temperature controllers, etc.
  • Troubleshoot and repair manufacturing equipment including electrical, instrumentation, mechanical, and process related issues
  • Leading role in annual HV shutdown; preventive maintenance on HV switches, transformers, switchgears
  • Use of PLC's and HMI's to troubleshoot system problems: Capable of going online to read code and locate area of the program associated with the problem to determine causes of the problem
  • Modify and write PLC code for troubleshooting and new control schemes
  • Add PLC hardware and configure for new and existing systems
  • Troubleshoot drive systems, upload/download drive files, install and parameterize
  • Perform mechanical repairs and assist maintenance mechanics as needed
  • Gain an increased knowledge of web handling and tension control of film in all processes
  • Work with Capital/Facilities Engineering, Programming Automation Controls Organization (PACO), and process engineering teams on projects and process improvement initiatives
  • Self-manage and prioritize work
  • Work overtime, receive after hour calls, and report onsite if needed to resolve problems
Qualifications
  • Associate Degree in Industrial Electronics or equivalent working experience
  • Minimum two years industrial controls/maintenance systems experience
  • In depth training and experience with PLC's and drive systems; Siemens and Allen Bradley
  • Training and knowledge of NEC and other NFPA standards
  • Knowledge of classified locations pertaining to electrical installations
  • Confined space training
  • NFPA 70E training
  • Ability to use Microsoft programs: Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Proficiency in verbal and written communications
  • Must build and maintain professional relationships with peers, customers, and leadership
  • Must be able to work in a team and individual basis
Working Conditions
  • Position will work mostly out in the field in various plant areas both inside and outside. Office environment work will apply as well.
  • Work will involve working in electrical panels and motor control centers where Arc Flash hazards may be present.
  • May be exposed to fugitive emissions of chemicals typical in chemical operations.
  • Must be able to climb stairs and ladders for installation and troubleshooting.
  • Must be willing and able to wear PPE including hard-hat, steel-toed shoes, safety glasses, fire-resistant clothing and any other devices or equipment that is required.
  • Physical demands - the physical demands of the job, including bending, sitting, lifting up to fifty (50) pounds, and driving.
  • Work environment - Indoor work to include working at heights and on ladders and occasional exposure to noise above 65 decibels.
  • Work hours - 12 hour rotating shift including nights, days, weekends, and Holidays as required.
