Role Description This full-time, on-site Assistant Cross Country and Track Coach (Throws) role is located in Spokane, WA. The position supports the head coach and program staff in all aspects of the throws events, including planning and running daily practices, teaching technique, and monitoring athlete development and performance. Responsibilities include assisting with strength and conditioning plans, supporting meet preparation and competition management, and helping with recruiting efforts and talent identification. The coach collaborates with athletic training and academic support staff to promote student-athlete well-being, academic success, and adherence to NCAA and university policies. Administrative duties such as maintaining equipment, contributing to program logistics, and attending staff meetings are also part of the day-to-day work.
Qualifications
- Technical coaching skills in track and field throws events (e.g., shot put, discus, hammer, javelin) and demonstrated ability to teach and refine event-specific technique.
- Experience designing and implementing training plans, including conditioning, strength development, and performance monitoring for collegiate or high school athletes.
- Knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations, with a commitment to compliance, sportsmanship, and student-athlete safety and well-being.
- Strong communication, mentoring, and interpersonal skills for working effectively with student-athletes, coaching staff, and campus partners.
- Organizational and time-management skills for handling practice planning, travel logistics, equipment oversight, and competition preparation.
- Prior coaching or competitive experience in track and field or cross country; collegiate coaching background is preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (such as kinesiology, sport management, education, or a similar discipline) or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings, weekends, and travel for practices, recruiting, and competitions.
- CPR/First Aid certification or willingness to obtain, and a demonstrated commitment to creating an inclusive, respectful team environment
