Veterinary Pathology Lab- Biopsy Laboratory Assistant

We are a private veterinary pathology lab in Gaithersburg, MD, looking to hire a reliable laboratory assistant for trimming biopsy tissue submissions from companion animals.

Strong working knowledge of veterinary anatomy required as well as a basic understanding of surgical margins. We will provide training, but this base knowledge is critical.

This is an ideal position for a credentialed veterinary technician, or a pathology assistant. Use your veterinary knowledge and experience to help patients in a unique way that does not involve speaking to pet owners or dealing with fractious animals.

Duties:

Prepare formalin fixed biopsy specimens for processing:

- Trim, ink and orient specimens to put in cassettes for processing

- Measure, describe using appropriate terminology and following templates, /- take pictures of specimens and lesions

- Willing to use saw to trim bone specimens

- Load the samples in the processor and start it on time

- Learn additional laboratory skills such as cover slipping, embedding samples, staining, etc.

- Respond to questions from the pathologists regarding samples you have prepared

- Assist with sample storage and disposal

- Assist with slide scanning machine and digital images

- Assist with laboratory administrative tasks such as sorting cases, pulling blocks/slides, maintaining service logs, etc.

- Adherence to all safety requirements.

Job requirements:

- Strong proficiency in veterinary anatomy. This can be a college level anatomy class or from an AVMA veterinary technician program. Willing to consider extensive experience from a veterinary surgical practice.

Job Hours:

Monday- Friday 8 am - 4 pm

Pay Range:

$23.00- $28.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
