Eastern Oregon University (EOU) is now accepting applications for the position of Instructional Designer and Open Educational Resources (OER) Coordinator.

The Instructional Designer and OER Coordinator position oversees and provides faculty instructional design training and support. This position leads faculty in creating meaningful, engaging, and equitable learning experiences for all students, including leading the support of Open Educational Resources (OER) development. Drawing from a deep familiarity of instructional design principles, education technology, and contemporary pedagogical methods, the Instructional Designer advances best practices in instructional design by providing support, consultations, training, and resource creation for high-quality teaching and learning. The position reports directly to the Dean of Library.

This is a Full-Time, 12-Month, Exempt position, that is eligible for the full spectrum of benefits offered by EOU. See below for more information about the outstanding benefits package. This position is eligible to work on the main EOU campus or work in fully-remote status (campus visits as needed).

This position has primary responsibility for overseeing and providing instructional design, online learning technology support, and Open Educational Resource (OER) design support for EOU teaching faculty. The position explores, trains, and provides leadership in teaching and learning practices and technologies that enhance pedagogical growth and instruction. The position ensures quality course design, transformational pedagogy, and OER development.
The Instructional Designer and OER Coordinator also is responsible for faculty professional development related to the design and accessibility of course shells, engagement of students through interactive pedagogy, the development of OER, and assessment of best practices that lead to continuous improvement. The position works with faculty leaders to ensure this professional development is offered consistently to faculty throughout the academic year.
Responsibilities
Instructional Design, Development, Research/Evaluation, Professional Development workshops, and Institutional Collaboration. The position ensures quality course design, transformational pedagogy, and OER development:
  • Educate and assist college faculty and subject matter experts to design, develop, and deliver engaging and accessible online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses.
  • Ensure instructional integrity and quality course development through systematic evaluation processes and clear course design standards, such as Quality Matters (QM) standards.
  • Facilitate the responsible, equitable, and effective integration of instructional technologies in Canvas courses and in-person learning environments.
  • Create accessible reference materials (help documents, how-to guides, videos, courses, and other similar items) that prepare faculty to use EOU’s LMS and related technologies.
  • Promote faculty engagement and grow the design culture around teaching and learning with technology, including working with faculty on consistently using Canvas to deliver innovative and engaging course design and assessment.
  • Directly provide education to faculty in identifying ways to leverage asynchronous and synchronous approaches to increase learner-to-learner, learner-to-faculty, and interactivity of digital content.
  • Research, evaluate, and integrate new and emerging educational technologies for online, hybrid, and web-enhanced courses.
  • Design and teach professional development workshops to EOU faculty, working closely with CTLA faculty leaders and faculty to integrate continuous learning and best practices around course design, interactive pedagogies, and the development of OER.
  • Collaborate with faculty librarians and Dean of Library on OER course development support and integration and tracking OER adoption and impact data.
  • Oversight of ADA compliance and best practices initiatives in EOU’s Canvas Shells. Provide training and support for college faculty and adjuncts to develop user-friendly online formats that comply with accessibility as defined by the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), Rehabilitation Act (508), Communications Act (Section 255), Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), and online teaching best practices.
  • Promote and lead open education activities across campus, encouraging participation by faculty, staff, and students to build a culture of OER at EOU.
  • Serve on various institutional committees and task forces, including search committees, planning groups, proposal review groups, and campus governance committees.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Masters Degree In Instructional Design, Educational Technology, Library Science, Curriculum Development, or related field.
  • Three (3) years of experience teaching or working as an instructional designer in face-to-face and online modalities in higher education.
  • Three (3) years of experience with Learning Management System (LMS) tools and online learning creation tools.
  • Three (3) years of experience in developing and delivering online courses, including strategies to increase engagement and persistence in remote learning environments.
  • Three (3) years of experience training and supporting college faculty and adjuncts to develop user-friendly online formats that comply with accessibility as defined by the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), Rehabilitation Act (508), Communications Act (Sec. 255) & WCAG.


  • Must satisfactorily complete EOU criminal and credential background check. Having a criminal history is not an automatic bar to employment.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Three (3) years of experience using contemporary pedagogical methods, such as Universal Design for Learning, open pedagogy, and/or other models that center on accessibility, usability, and inclusivity.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at different stages while meeting deadlines and quality standards.
