The Regional Ombudsman will:
- Investigate complaints involving residents of long-term care facilities, including concerns related to care, services, benefits, and residents' rights.
- Advocate for residents and assist in mediating and resolving complaints with long-term care providers.
- Gather and document information related to complaints and work with facility management and appropriate agencies toward resolution.
- Maintain confidentiality and accurate records related to investigations and other program activities.
- Monitor long-term care facilities and advocate for the protection of residents' rights.
- Provide information and assistance to residents, families, facility staff, volunteers, and members of the public regarding long-term care issues.
- Recruit, orient, train, and provide ongoing support to Community Advisory Committee (CAC) volunteers.
- Develop, coordinate, and conduct educational programs, presentations, and training for volunteers, facility staff, community organizations, and the public.
- Develop and maintain productive relationships with facility administrators, county and local officials, social services agencies, councils on aging, state agencies, and other community partners.
- Stay current on federal and state laws, regulations, policies, and issues affecting long-term care residents and facilities.
- Promote awareness and prevention of elder abuse through presentations, community education, and outreach.
- Represent the Ombudsman Program and the long-term care population at meetings, hearings, community events, and professional programs.
- Complete required documentation, reports, and program records.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and programs affecting long-term care facilities, residents' rights, Medicare, Medicaid, and aging services.
- Strong advocacy, mediation, conflict-resolution, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to objectively investigate complaints, interview individuals, document findings, maintain confidentiality, and advocate effectively for residents.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong public speaking and presentation skills.
- Ability to develop effective working relationships with older adults, families, volunteers, facility administrators, government officials, regulatory agencies, and community organizations.
- Ability to organize and prioritize work and exercise sound independent judgment with limited supervision.
- Ability to conduct, coordinate, and deliver effective training and educational programs for diverse audiences.
- Proficiency with computers and technology used for documentation, communication, reporting, and presentations.
