Position Summary
The Special Education Teacher provides individualized instruction and support to students with diverse learning needs in a small rural school setting. This role requires flexibility, collaboration, and a strong commitment to building relationships with students, families, and staff. The teacher will develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), monitor student progress, and ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Instruction & Student Support
- Develop and implement individualized education plans (IEPs) aligned with student needs and goals
- Provide direct instruction in academic, behavioral, and social-emotional skills
- Adapt curriculum and instructional strategies to meet diverse learning needs
- Utilize a variety of teaching methods and resources to support student engagement and success
- Support students in both general education and specialized settings
Collaboration
- Work closely with general education teachers to support inclusion and differentiation
- Collaborate with paraprofessionals, related service providers, and administration
- Communicate regularly with families regarding student progress and needs
- Participate in IEP meetings and multidisciplinary team discussions
Assessment & Compliance
- Conduct ongoing assessments to monitor student progress and adjust instruction
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation of student data and IEP requirements
- Ensure compliance with all state and federal special education laws and regulations
Behavior & Classroom Management
- Implement positive behavior supports and intervention plans
- Foster a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment
- Support students in developing self-regulation and independence skills
Additional Duties
- Participate in staff meetings, professional development, and school activities
- Assist with supervision duties as needed in a small school setting
- Take on additional responsibilities that support the overall mission of the district
Qualifications
- Valid state teaching license with Special Education endorsement (or willingness to obtain)
- Knowledge of special education laws, procedures, and best practices
- Strong communication, organization, and collaboration skills
- Ability to work effectively with students of varying ages and abilities
- Experience in a rural or small school setting preferred but not required
