    SALARY: $48,000 - $113,997 WORK YEAR: 180 Days

    REPORTS TO: School Principal

    JOB DESCRIPTION

    Job Summary: The job of a School Nurse is for the purpose/s of managing a health services program for the assessment, evaluation, maintenance, and improvement of the health of students and staff, strengthening and facilitating the educational process by improving and protecting the health status of students; participating in the identification of and assisting in the removal or modification of health-related barriers to learning in individual students; promoting the prevention of illness and disability as well as early detection and correction of health problems.

    EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

    • Illinois Professional Educator License Required
    • High School diploma or equivalent;
    • Any combination equivalent to an associate's degree, sixty (60) semester hours
    • One year of experience working with children

    DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (Essential Job Functions)

    • Administers primary health care and First Aid to provide appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, and injured children.
    • Assesses and evaluates pupils' health and developmental status to identify physical disorders and other factors affecting the learning process; communicates with the primary care provider; and contributes significant information to modify the pupil’s individualized education/health plan.
    • Collaborates with parents, students, health care providers, and/or other agencies to promote needed treatment, secure information, and comply with legal requirements.
    • Conducts programs and activities (e.g., in-service training, hearing, vision, color vision, immunization review, scoliosis screening, etc.) to ensure compliance with government-mandated requirements.
    • Designs health maintenance plans to address students' health needs and implement health care directions from parents and/or physicians.
    • Directs department functions to prioritize project deadlines and ensure optimal utilization of personnel.
    • Interprets the health and developmental assessment for parents, teachers, administrators, and other professionals directly concerned with the student to serve as an advocate for students with identified health problems and concerns.
    • Maintains communication with parents and all involved community practitioners and agencies to promote needed treatment and secure reports of findings pertinent to educational planning.
    • Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards, and immunization records of all site students to ensure compliance with state law and provide information required for intra-district transfer of records as needed.
    • Monitors all student medications administered at school as a physician prescribes to ensure compliance with state law.
    • Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g., quantity reports, student activities, correspondence, etc.) to document activities, providing written references and conveying information in compliance with state law.
    • Provides information on coverage for children of low—to moderate-income working families to promote district students' participation in affordable, comprehensive health coverage programs.
    • Refers students and their parents or guardians who require further medical attention, provides appropriate community resources for necessary services, and assures continuity of health services and care.
    • Reports cases of suspected child abuse to ensure compliance with all related law requirements and provides annual training on CPS reporting procedures and bloodborne pathogens to all staff.
    • Reports students with reportable contagious diseases to local public health authorities to minimize infection and comply with legal requirements.
    • Responds to medical emergencies to address immediate safety concerns.
    • Serves as the medical liaison for special education students (e.g. performing vision and hearing assessment for triennial reassessments, reviewing each child's health and developmental history, attending individualized education program meetings as needed, etc.) to ensure compliance with state mandate.
    • Trains and supervises staff in performing specialized physical health care procedures (e.g., catheterizations, gavage feeding, suctioning, etc.) to ensure that procedures requiring medically related training comply with state law.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of:

    • Required to perform algebra and geometry; read technical information, compose a variety of documents, and/or facilitate group discussions;
    • And analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions.
    • Specific knowledge required to perform the functions of the job satisfactorily includes school nursing services and procedures, and principles and practice of community health nursing; total education program including an understanding of current practices and trends relating to school health and factors influencing the learning process;

    Ability to:

    • Required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather, collate, and/or classify data; and use job-related equipment.
    • Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined but different processes; and operate equipment using a variety of standardized methods.
    • Ability is also required to work with a significant diversity of individuals and groups, work with data of widely varied types and/or purposes;
    • Utilize a variety of job-related equipment.
    • In working with others, independent problem solving is required to analyze issues and create action plans.
    • Problem-solving with data requires an analysis based on organizational objectives, and problem-solving with equipment is moderate.
    • Specific abilities required to perform the functions of the job satisfactorily include interpreting the school health program and its services to the community, conducting health appraisals and screenings;
    • Responding effectively to emergency medical situations and establishing and maintaining cooperative professional working relationships.
    • Communicate clearly and effectively.

    Skills:

    • Required to perform multiple, highly complex, technical tasks with a need to upgrade skills to meet changing job conditions occasionally.
    • Specific skills required to perform the functions of the job satisfactorily include training and supervising personnel performing specialized physical health care procedures, preparing and maintaining comprehensive student health records
    • Preparing and presenting comprehensive health reports, including state-mandated report
