JOB DESCRIPTION
Organization Summary
East Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement and through its youth education and technology programs it teaches skills to allow its students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve.
ESH is directly responsible for the administration Learning-to-Work Program, which enhances the school’s academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and internships. ESH works in a transfer schools, serving students who struggled in a traditional high school setting. The program is designed to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited or have dropped out of high school.
Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Assistant Director will be responsible to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
Primary Functions
Duties and responsibilities shall include but are not limited to the following:
- Work in tandem with Program Director to ensure that the partnership between East Side House and the DOE site is in good standing.
- Ensure Admissions criteria and intake goals are being met monthly by conducting intake interviews with students and family members and / or facilitating orientations.
- Help supervise advisors to ensure that attendance outreach is completed daily, home visits are done when necessary, and student logs stay current. Ensure that post-secondary support and college exploration is also incorporated into student engagement.
- Manage social networks for the purpose of keeping in touch with Alumni
- Manage Alumni events and data tracking
- Provide trainings on Advisory Curriculum Development and support lesson planning aligned with Common Core Standards.
- Help advise a caseload primarily of students participating in the Learning to Work (LTW) program and provide added support in their academic, career and personal goals.
- Solicit, develop and cultivate internship and/or job opportunities within the community including use of calls and visits to employers to maintain internship partner’ relations.
- Maintain ongoing contact with employers to learn of new internship and/or employment needs as well as problems arising from existing placements.
- Reach the minimum number of internship enrollment as requested
- Assist students in developing and achieving life/career goals that are assessed throughout LTW weekly seminars and during individual career exploration.
- Assist students in job search, including resume and cover letter development, search strategies and interviewing skills.
- Refer students to academic and support services as needed.
- Attend administrative meetings, program trainings and staff development.
- Participate in civic and community building efforts and activities as assigned via East Side House Community Development.
- Ensure that all fiscal documents are being submitted in a timely manner, which include Bi-weekly internship payroll on Paycom.
- Maintain updated records of all fiscal transactions for the year, which include monthly LTW internship budget.
- Assist in making purchase orders for student incentives and special events.
- Participate and help arrange field trips, special events and extracurricular activities.
- Maintain flexible hours and workdays, some overnight trips required.
- Establish liaisons with corporate and nonprofit organizations for identification of employment and internship opportunities, and to provide workshops and mentoring opportunities for students including coordination with other community youth employment assistance programs.
- Assist and provide support when Director is present or unavailable in areas of program and staff management
- Maintain database tracking and reporting of each student’s progress and measurable outcomes including timely entry of case notes of weekly meetings and incidents, and employment.
- Prepare and present curriculum to students on job readiness and related topics; facilitate interactive Seminars.
- Ensure the program establishes 3 to 5 new internship sites every year; while maintaining necessary partnership contracts in order.
- Provide case management services for the students in the program.
- Attend meetings with staff to review students’ progress and discuss appropriate trainings and intervention plans. Actively participate in initiatives, affiliations, coalitions, etc. that pertain to East Side House’s mission.
- Participate in assigned staff development trainings.
- Actively participate in team and program meetings. Provide suggestions for program improvement and implementation.
- Assist Director in overseeing the creation of innovative and contextualized student learning experiences.
- Provide other program support functions as required.

Requisite Education and Experience
- Minimum required BA/BS with at least two years’ experience with youth-related work.
- Excellent verbal, analytical, writing, communication and organizational skills.

- Supervisory experience and demonstrated leadership skills.

Expected Work Schedule
Work days/hours subject to change based on ESH’s needs. This is a full-time position (35 hours) expected top generally work. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday: 8am-4pm. Some weekends may be required.
Required Clearance
Department of Education (DOE) fingerprinting.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position may supervise assigned personnel, including front line staff and/or support staff.
Work Environment
Business casual. This job operates in a professional school environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines
Travel
Travel will be required to secure internship sites, to conduct site visits and to meet with site supervisors. Travel will be requested from DOE site to East Side House main building.
Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. This is generally a sedentary role; however, some filing and site visits are required. This would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
