Class Title:Speech Pathologist Department:School Classification:Teacher - 183 days Immediate Supervisor: Director of Pupil Personnel and/or Assistant Director Pupil Personnel Services CLASS DESCRIPTION The Speech Pathologist is directly responsible to the Director of Pupil Personnel and/or the Assistant Director Pupil Personnel Services and works in liaison with the building principals. The Speech Pathologist is expected to provide a full range of speech services. He/she will devote his/her efforts toward improving the educational experience of those students with emotional, behavioral and learning disabilities. ESSENTIAL DUTIES and RESPONSIBILITIES: 1.In the Fall of each year, the Speech Pathologist shall screen all Kindergarten children together with those first graders who did not attend Kindergarten. The Speech Pathologist shall also screen students referred to him/her by the principal of the elementary schools. 2.He/she shall make the final decision as to who shall be accepted into the speech classes. 3.He/shall handle all “C” type cases. He/she shall help and guide the classroom teacher in the handling of “b” type cases. 4.He/she submit to the Director of Pupil Personnel a schedule for approval of classes no later than one (1) month after the opening of school. 5.He/she shall notify the parents of all children needing help on approved forms and shall obtain the consent of the parent before the child is admitted to the classes. 6.He/she shall be a member of the School Health Council and shall attend meeting of the Council. 7.He/she shall arrange a definite schedule of parent-teacher meetings and notify parents so as to bring about a working relationship between parents and therapists. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Education and Experience: •Bachelor’s Degree from an institution approved by the State Board of Regents. •5 year’s experience preferred. •Must possess a valid Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) certification as a Speech Pathologist. •Must possess a high degree of tact, diplomacy and confidentiality. •Must be detailed oriented with good organizational skills. •Must be proficient with computers. PHYSICAL DEMANDS The physical demands described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to work in a variety of physical positions, including, but not limited to, sitting, standing, stretching, and walking. The employee is regularly required to talk and/or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands handle or feel. The employee must be able to do physical activities such as, but not limited to, lifting and/or moving up to ten (10) pounds, and occasionally lift items slightly over ten (10) pounds. The use of a step stool may be required to reach the top drawer of a filing cabinet as necessary. Specific vision abilities include close vision.
