CLASS DESCRIPTION
The substitute teacher assumes the duties of the regularly assigned classroom teacher in his or her absence, maintaining continuity of instruction and a safe, orderly learning environment. Substitutes may be assigned to any grade level or content area across the district based on daily need. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Adheres to the policies and related directives of the East Providence School Department.
- Reports to the assigned building on time and checks in at the main office at the start of each assignment.
- Reviews and follows lesson plans, seating charts, and instructions left by the classroom teacher; delivers planned instruction to the full class period or day.
- Maintains a safe, respectful, and orderly classroom consistent with school-wide expectations and building procedures.
- Takes and records accurate attendance according to building practice.
- Supervises students in the classroom and in assigned duties such as hallway, cafeteria, recess, arrival, and dismissal coverage.
- Follows all student health, safety, emergency, and evacuation procedures for the assigned building.
- Adheres to student confidentiality requirements, including FERPA and IDEA, and maintains confidentiality regarding student records, IEPs, 504 plans, and behavior information.
- Implements accommodations and modifications identified in student IEPs and 504 plans as directed by building staff.
- Collects and secures student work, and leaves written notes for the classroom teacher summarizing what was covered and any concerns.
- Reports any student injury, behavioral incident, or safety concern to the main office immediately.
- Returns all keys, materials, and district-issued items to the office at the end of the assignment.
- Other duties as assigned by the Building Principal or designee.
- Bachelor's Degree or higher required for substitute teaching assignments.
- Must possess or be eligible for a valid Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) Substitute Teacher Certificate.
- Prior experience working with school-age children preferred.
- Must possess a high degree of tact, diplomacy, and confidentiality.
- Must be dependable, punctual, and able to accept assignments on short notice.
- Must be proficient with basic computer and classroom technology.
- National and state criminal background check (BCI) as required by Rhode Island law.
- Completion of all district onboarding and mandatory training prior to first assignment.
- Per diem, as-needed basis; no guaranteed number of days.
- Daily rate of $ 125 per day, Day 31 $150, Day 61 $175. Long-term substitute assignments are compensated at a higher rate. Please note these are working days.
- Assignments are posted and accepted through Frontline/Aesop.
- Substitute positions are not benefit-eligible.
