What are the responsibilities and job description for the Leadership Development Fellow position at East Oakland Youth Development Center?
Role Title: Leadership Development Coach Fellow
SUMMARY
EOYDC’s mission is to nurture the holistic development of youth from kindergarten into adulthood so that they can live a life of prosperity, integrity, and purpose.
EOYDC’s summer programming includes a mix of program options featuring educational and enrichment activities for elementary and middle school aged students. EOYDC incorporates a cascading mentorship model in which older youth serve as mentors (Youth Leaders) to program participants. Under the supervision of the Extended Learning Manager and the Dir. of Educational Programming, the Leadership Development Coach will be responsible for providing support to Youth Leaders and participants in the Summer Cultural Enrichment Program.
Participants of this fellowship can expect to learn the following:
- Best practices for delivering coaching feedback both through one-on-one and group coaching sessions
- Trauma-informed care (TIC), healing-centered approaches for working with children, teens, and young adults
o All fellows will complete TIC certification as part of training
- Positive Discipline practices and strategies
- Best practices for interpersonal communication, both verbal and digital
- Facilitate conflict management based on evidenced-based models/practices
- Tools for team building and collaboration
- Culturally resonant practices grounded in Belonging, Dignity, Justice, and Joy (BDJJ)
All fellows must be available for training, which would take place in-person May 26-June 13, 2025. Program dates are June 15th-July 17th, with professional development from July 20th-July 24th.
Intern and Staff Support
- Provide ongoing, hands-on coaching and guidance to high school and college-aged youth participating in EOYDC’s work-based learning program as Youth Leaders
- Conduct 1-on-1 check-ins with Youth Leaders on a bi-weekly basis, with additional 1-on-1 coaching provided, as needed
- Co-design and lead training sessions for Youth Leaders
- Build individual development plans for assigned Youth Leaders with input from program leads
- Develop team building and motivation among Youth Leaders
- Facilitate conflict resolution among Youth Leaders and other participants, as needed
- Support interns in completing milestones and navigating obstacles that may make completion more challenging
Program Coordination
- Support in the supervision and direction of program activities led by Youth Leaders and Youth Instructors
- Ensure Youth Leaders and children participating in program activities are following all program and safety procedures/guidelines
- Closely supervise and support Youth Leaders during lunch and recess
- Consistently role model EOYDC’s six character: trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness, citizenship, and caring
Assessment and Reporting
- Conduct performance reviews with Youth Leaders
- Provide quantitative and qualitative data inputs for Oakland Fund for Children and Youth (OFCY) database and other grant reports
- Identify opportunities for program improvement
- Contribute to end of summer report as needed
QUALIFICATIONS
Education and experience equivalent to:
- At least 48 college credits or equivalent
- At least 3 years work and/or internship experience in a child/youth development setting
- Prior experience with summer programming at EOYDC a plus
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and coach peers, youth, and children
- Demonstrated understanding of the dynamics of the community EOYDC serves, to include experience working within racially marginalized communities
- Strong leadership, communication, and conflict management skills
- Ability to maintain high energy levels and positive attitude
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus
COMPENSATION
This is a temporary position through July 27, 2026, with the potential to apply for a similar role during the 2026-2027 school year. Hours may vary based on training and holiday schedules, but will generally average 35-40 hours/week at the rate of $25 per hour, depending on experience.
