Behavior Support Assistant - Part TIme

Job Title: Behavior Support Assistant 

Job Summary: The Behavior Support Assistant plays a critical role in fostering a positive school climate by supporting student behavior, emotional wellness, and social-emotional development. This individual works closely with school teams, teachers, and the district’s Behavior Team to implement effective behavioral interventions, restorative practices, and wellness initiatives. The Behavior Support Assistant supports students both proactively and responsively—before, during, and after crisis situations—and provides coaching to staff on implementing trauma-informed and restorative approaches to student behavior.

Qualifications:

• Associate’s degree (48 college credit hours) or higher

• Experience working with students who need additional behavioral or emotional support and may experience crisis situations 

• Demonstrated understanding of behavioral strategies, social-emotional learning, and restorative practices

• CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) training preferred or willingness to be trained

Reports To: School Principal, with support from the District Behavior Specialists

Responsibilities, Duties, & Expectations:

• Behavioral Support and Crisis Intervention

• Assist in implementing and monitoring Tier 2 and Tier 3 behavior intervention plans (BIPs) and strategies based on student data and team input

• Provide in-the-moment crisis intervention, de-escalation, and supervision of students as needed

• Assist staff in collecting data for Functional Behavior Assessments (FBAs) and implementing Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) effectively and safely

• Collect and maintain data on student progress related to behavior and emotional goals

• Restorative Practices and SEL

• Lead and support the use of restorative circles, conflict resolution meetings, and re-entry conferences

• Build strong, positive relationships with students and teach social-emotional skills through small-group or individual instruction

• Provide proactive social skills training to promote student self-regulation, empathy, and responsible decision-making

• Collaboration and Teamwork

• Attend and actively participate in MTSS, BPST, and behavior-related meetings

• Partner with school counselors, teachers, administrators, and families to coordinate student support plans

• Participate in ongoing professional development and district-level behavior team meetings

• Collaborate with mental health personnel to align behavioral and emotional wellness goals
  
  

Other Duties

• Assist students in classrooms, common areas, and during transitions throughout the school day

• Perform other duties as assigned by the principal or district leadership

Essential Skills & Competencies:

• Knowledge of North Carolina content standards and behavior support frameworks

• Expertise in evidence-based practices such as de-escalation, positive behavior reinforcement, trauma-informed care, and restorative practices

• Ability to build strong, trusting relationships with students, staff, and families

• Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills

• Maintains confidentiality, professionalism, and ethical behavior

• Capacity to collect, monitor, and act on student-level data related to behavior and wellness

Physical Requirements:

• Ability to operate a variety of equipment including computers, copiers, and other instructional tools

• Ability to operate a motor vehicle

• Must be able to perform physical functions including standing, walking, kneeling, lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and supporting students in crisis situations

Evaluation and Measurement of Performance: Classified Evaluation Form – Instructional Staff

Term of Employment: Full time position with a work schedule established by the School Administrator. Employment is on a year to year basis and is contingent upon the continued availability of federal grant funding. Flat hourly rate as determined by the Board of Education.
