Physical Education Instructional Assistant
Directly Reports: Building Principal
General Summary:
The Physical Education Instructional Assistant works under the direction of the building principal and health and physical education teachers to oversee the student locker room(s) and assists in other duties in the health and physical education department and building in general.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Assists teachers in supervising students in locker room(s) and adjacent physical education facilities.
- Coordinates attendance with appropriate offices when needed.
- Confirms attendance/tardiness with offices when asked or reports attendance for substitutes.
- Assists students that cannot physically participate in Physical Education class activities with alternate assignments as approved by their Physical Education teacher.
- Secures the locker room(s) and maintains security each hour.
- Dismisses students from class under the direction of the health and physical education instructors.
- Answers the telephone and takes messages.
- Supervises contents in the locker rooms.
- Assists health and physical education staff with clerical duties including typing, correcting papers, making copies, and assembling materials as directed.
- Ensures that ice bags are available for first aid purposes.
- Maintains equipment, organizes storage rooms, inventories equipment, marks equipment, and repairs equipment when possible.
- Assists health and physical education department staff members with displays, bulletin boards, etc.
- Assists with school-sponsored fundraisers.
- Assists staff in emergencies as directed.
- Maintains confidentiality in all matters concerning staff and students.
- Collects information, distributes staff/student school announcements as requested.
- Assists in coordination of special events/services, such as pep assemblies or scoliosis screening.
- Maintains and organizes the school lost and found and the distribution of items to needy students or charities as requested.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:
- Minimum education requirement is a high school diploma. Previous college credit, WorkKeys certification or college degree preferred.
- Interpersonal skills necessary to deal effectively and courteously with students and school personnel.
- Ability to care for, supervise, and nurture children.
- Basic knowledge of computers and technology.
- Ability to follow directions.

Physical and Mental Requirements:
- Must be able to report on a regular and consistent basis.
- Maintain consistent and punctual attendance.
- Duties include frequent walking and physical activity, as well as use of hands and arms for signaling and light lifting/carrying. Must have the ability to move about the classroom/building and school property, including bending, pushing/pulling, lifting, twisting, climbing, stooping, or crouching to complete work-related tasks with and without students.

Environmental Conditions:
Incumbents work in indoor environments with moderate to loud noise levels. Duties may be completed in cold and hot temperatures, including work on slippery and/or uneven surfaces. Work environment includes working around students, school equipment, and office equipment.
Work Schedules:
Must be available to report during the school year consistent with the district’s school year calendar.
