Job Goal: To develop an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual arts, using skills and techniques of artistic expression appropriate to the student’s interests and abilities; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of art consistent with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
Supervision: Reports to the Building Principal.
Education, Work Experience, and Licensure:
Required: Bachelor’s Degree
Department of Education Certification as an Art Teacher, (K-9).
MA DESE Certified Acceptable CORI, SORI, DCF, and fingerprint report as determined by the Superintendent
Preferred: Master’s Degree
Prior work experience as an Art Teacher.
Competency in use of current related educational technology.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including crafts, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art, following the course of study adopted by the School Committee that is fully aligned with the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.
- Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school.
- Provides instruction by which students develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art.
- Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting, and modeling, using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids.
- Develops lesson plans based on the state standards. Organizes class
time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, and working time.
- Provides individual and small-group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of students with varying intellectual and artistic abilities.
- Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive student environment.
- Instructs students in proper care and use of tools and equipment.
- Organizes storage areas and controls use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse, and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.
- Evaluates each student’s performance and progress in knowledge and aesthetic understandings, and prepares progress reports.
- Selects and requests books, instructional materials, tools, instructional aids, and maintains required inventory records.
- Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit students’ work for the school and the community.
- Sponsors art exhibits approved or assigned by the administration.
- Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the school and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
- Communicates with parents and school counselors on student progress.
- Engages in ongoing curriculum development activities as part of the district’s goal of maintaining a contemporary instructional program.
- Participates on faculty committees as assigned.
- Maintains accurate, complete and correct records as required by law, school policy and administrative procedures.
- Administers or monitors group tests.
- Acts as a Mandated Reporter (Chapter 119, Section 51A).
- Complies with the Non-Violent Crisis Intervention Policy.
- Has a sense of humor.
- Other duties may be assigned by the Building Principal and/or Superintendent.
