General Summary
In accordance with the established policies and procedures of the East Lansing Public School District, the Elementary Instructional Coach is responsible for providing support, collaboration and professional learning to K- 5 teachers to increase teacher capacity in core and targeted instruction in all subjects, primarily reading and math. The Elementary Instructional Coach will work directly with the building principal to coordinate a plan that impacts student achievement and addresses goals of the building school improvement plan. Deep understanding of literacy instruction, interpreting data, and building strong, trusting relationships with teachers – along with expert communication and organizational skills are a must for the person in this position. The Elementary Instructional Coach will provide job-embedded professional development support at the classroom, building, and elementary levels to teachers. This position will not include direct student intervention.
About the Role
- Serves as a resource to teachers and the building principal by collaboratively planning and implementing best instructional practices.
- Cooperatively plans, organizes and provides classroom, school and district level professional development.
- Keeps abreast of federal and state mandates relating to literacy assessment and instructional practices that impact schools
- Evaluates school’s student achievement data to provide coaching that helps teachers use data to adjust instruction and improve student performance.
- Consistently employs self-reflection.
- Establishes and sustains positive, productive relationships with principals and instructional staff.
- Collaborates with teacher teams, co-teaches lessons and models instruction.
- Models professional judgement in dealing with confidential information.
- Employs the use of technology within instruction on a consistent basis.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal and the Deputy Superintendent.
- Attends staff meetings in assigned schools as necessary.
- Attends all mandatory professional development.
Education, Knowledge and Skills Required
- A minimum of five to seven years of successful K-5 teaching experience. A Master’s Degree in Education is preferred – especially literacy.
- Experience in providing coaching support for teachers either formally or informally.
- Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of K - 5 curriculum, effective instruction, technology, assessment procedures, MTSS, research and evidence-based practices in instruction.
- Demonstrates the personal qualities of an effective teacher including the ability to collaborate with other staff and the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences.
- Evidence of successful leadership within an organization, demonstrating competence in working with colleagues and administration.
- Facilitation skills to provide support for professional development, school improvement work, and PLC / grade level meetings.
- Knowledge of collaborative practices, group dynamics and group consensus-building techniques.
- Demonstrated commitment to professional growth.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability and desire to carry out all duties of the position.
- Effective planning and organizational abilities.
