OUR MISSION
Our mission is to ensure the physical, operational and financial integrity of the regional flood risk management system, in southeastern Louisiana as a defense against floods and storm surge from hurricanes. We accomplish this mission by working with local, regional, state and federal partners to plan, design, construct, operate and maintain projects that will reduce the probability and risk of flooding for the residents and businesses within our jurisdiction.

The Orleans Levee District jurisdictional area falls under the umbrella of the Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority-East (SLFPA-E) and includes East Jefferson, Orleans and St. Bernard parishes on the East Bank. It is the duty of the Orleans Levee District Police Department to patrol and inspect the levees and floodwalls that surround Orleans Parish and to check various gauges and flood structures to ensure the integrity of the levee system.

ABOUT THIS POSITION
The incumbent in this position performs responsible, commissioned and law enforcement duties in the prevention of crime and to protect life and property, while armed and uniformed. Supervision is from a police official of a higher level, i.e. Police Sergeant, Police Lieutenant, and/or Police Captain.

** Agency preferred qualification: The incumbent in this position is required to be POST certified **

Minimum Qualifications

No experience or training is required.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must be at least 18 years of age.

Possession of a current Louisiana driver's license.

Willingness and ability to attain a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) certification.

An applicant who has been convicted of a felony or who is under indictment on a felony charge will be disqualified until relief from the disabilities imposed by state and federal laws is granted.

Job Duties and Other Information

Job Duties:

  • Protects life and property, with an emphasis on law enforcement, crime prevention, crime and accident investigation and arranging emergency services. Incumbents patrol an assigned area on foot or in a vehicle to detect and prevent crime.
  • Inspects and reports on the condition of 107 miles of earthen levees and floodwalls, 1400 acres of levee turn maintenance area, 200 land-based floodgates and 6 navigational floodgates, 3 permanent canal closures and pumps, and various valves along the levee system.
  • Participates in large-scale crowd control on the Lakefront during peak season. Assists the New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) with crowd control during Mardi Gras. Also provides backup to NOPD in other law enforcement activities as requested.
  • Escorts SLFPA-E staff, trucks and equipment to other parishes requiring assistance with flood protection or levee repair/reinforcement. Provides security for SLFPA-E’s emergency repair/maintenance and repair crews during hurricane or other events that could lead to flooding. Ensures that only authorized individuals are allowed access to such areas
  • As requested, aids other law enforcement entities, including the Jefferson Parish Sheriff s Department, the Department of Wildlife and Fisheries, the FBI, the Secret Service, the DEA, the US Coast Guard, the US Customs Department, and the Department of immigration and Naturalization. When requested, assist other law enforcement departments in detaining aircraft arriving at the New Orleans Lakefront Airport

Position-Specific Details:

Appointment Type: Probational - up to 24 months
Career Progression: This position may be filled as a Police Officer 1, 2, or 3.

NOTE:
The Orleans Levee District is an emergency-oriented agency. Part of the mission is to protect the residents of Orleans Parish from tidal surge, wind-driven water and river flooding. In emergencies during Mississippi River flooding and Hurricane Tropical Storm events, the incumbent will be on call and must report for duty if so required, remaining on duty in such situations until released from duty by the Appointing Authority.
