    Assistant Principal, Elementary and Secondary

    Year-Round Position
    Salary Range: $143,043 - $150,641 (Per Contract)

    TITLE: Assistant Principal, Elementary and Secondary

    REPORTS TO: Principal

    SUPERVISES: Supervises staff as designated by Principal.

    SUMMARY DESCRIPTION OF CLASSIFICATION:
    The East Hartford Public Schools (EHPS) Assistant Principal assigned to Woodland School (K-12), under the direction of the Principal, will assist in the total supervision and administration of the school. The assistant principal will also:

    • Serve as the building leader in the principal’s absence.
    • Supports the development of school programming including master schedule of classes and extracurricular activities.
    • Supervises the preparation of student schedules.
    • Works with Department Heads and faculty in compiling the annual budget requests.
    • Manages requisitions supplies, textbooks, and equipment, conducts inventories; maintains records; and checks on receipts for such material.
    • Assists in safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
    • Assumes responsibility for coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
    • Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student discipline and attendance; works with appropriate staff to address discipline and chronic attendance issues.
    MINIMUM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS
    KNOWLEDGE:
    • Principles and practices of school leadership and administrative responsibilities
    • School programming, scheduling and extracurricular activities
    • Understanding of therapeutic school environment and/or special education population
    Skills:
    • Compliance with appropriate laws, policies, procedures, and practices;
    • Gather, analyze and interpret data
    • Identify, recommend, and implement changes to maximize efficiency
    • Motivate staff to develop necessary job-related skills to improve job performance
    • Able to provide staff authority and discretion to accomplish work tasks and make decisions
    • Maintain a high level of security and confidentiality of information
    Abilities:
    • Supervise, train, and evaluate the work of assigned staff
    • Formulate and implement program goals, objectives, and schedules
    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing
    • Establish and maintain excellent collaborative relationships with all stakeholders
    • Manage staff relationships to ensure the student needs are being effectively addressed
    • Conduct meetings utilizing consensus-building techniques and conflict resolution strategies
    EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EPERIENCE: Required: Master's degree and a minimum of five years of teaching experience. Must possess the 092 certification or the equivalent. Demonstrated successful administrative leadership experience. Culturally proficient in speaking, writing, and engaging a diverse, multi-lingual population. Such alternatives to the above as deemed appropriate by the Superintendent.
    CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS: Must meet and necessary professional requirements: Connecticut State Department of Education (CSDE) requirements: Certification as an Administrator

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (Special requirements such as lifting heavy objects and frequent climbing.) As required by the duties and responsibilities of the job. sitting, standing, and walking for extended periods, reaching, fine manual dexterity, pushing, pulling, talking, hearing, near and far visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision.


    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Frequent overtime or night work may be required, etc. Ability to work flexible hours, including some evening and weekend work
    EVALUATION: Performance of this position will be evaluated annually by the building principal

    OVERTIME ELIGIBLE: No (performs related duties consistent with the scope and intent of the position)

    EAMPLES OF PERFORMANCE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    • Assists and supports the Principal in the total supervision l and administration of the school.
    • May serves as the building leader in the Principal’s absence.
    • Supports the development of school programming including master schedule of classes and extracurricular activities.
    • Supervises the preparation of student schedules.
    • Works with Department Heads and faculty in compiling the annual budget requests.
    • Manages requisitions supplies, textbooks, and equipment, conducts inventories; maintains records; and checks on
    receipts for such material.
    • Assists in safety inspections and safety drill practice activities.
    • Assumes responsibility for coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other support services.
    • Supervises the reporting and monitoring of student discipline and attendance; works with appropriate staff to
    address disciple and chronic attendance issues.
    • Serves with parent, faculty, and student groups as requested in advancing educational and related activities and
    objectives.
    • Administers the student insurance program.
    • Performs such record-keeping functions as the Principal may direct.
    • Supervises teachers, support staff, and departments as assigned by the Principal.
    • Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as the Principal may from time to time assign.
    • Provides for adequate inventories of school property and for the security and accountability for that property.
    • Supervises and evaluates the school activities including extracurricular program.
    • Participates in assigned Principals’ meetings (i.e., negotiations, advisories, leadership meetings), and such other
    meetings as appropriate.
    • Serves as an ex-officio member of all committees and councils within the school.
    • Cooperates with college and university officials regarding teacher training and preparation.
    • Responds to written and oral requests for information.
    • Under the direction of the Principal assumes responsibility for all official school correspondence and news releases collaborating with EHPS Communication’s Office as appropriate.
    • Acts as liaison between the school and the community, interpreting activities and policies of the school and
    encouraging community participation in school life.
    • Serves as a member of such committees and attends such meetings as directed by the Principal.
    • Other duties as assigned by the Superintendent or Principal.

    TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and benefits in accordance with the negotiated agreement between the East Hartford Public Schools and the East Hartford Educational Administrative and Supervisory Unit.
