DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS
Under supervision, an employee in this class is responsible for operating motor vehicles and simple diesel or gasoline powered equipment, such as a small dump, flatbed or similar basic truck or single chassis automotive vehicle, frequently having mechanical attachments which require the manipulation of simple controls on the vehicle or on the attachment itself. The incumbent's primary work responsibility is for the efficient operation of the assigned vehicle and for the safe transportation of passengers, materials and equipment from place to place. The incumbent is responsible for the routine maintenance of the assigned vehicle(s) and, when not driving, performs manual labor. Work receives periodic checks while in progress and upon completion for adherence to established policy and procedures. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES
Operates light motor vehicles such as automobiles, jeeps or station wagons to transport passengers or small-size loads from one location to another; Operates dump trucks (less than 10 wheels) to haul sand, gravel, tools or equipment; operates dump body to displace or unload sand, gravel and other materials while truck is standing or moving; Operates garbage packers (less than 10 wheels); Operates a basin cleaner used for removing dirt from catch basins; Operates a distributor applying oils, asphalts, or tars to a highway surface; loads distributor from supply tank; patches highways; Operates tractors pulling mowing machinery and equipment; Operates regular and modified trucks containing spraying machinery and apparatus; drives vehicle and operates pumping and spraying equipment; Drives fuel truck to various parts of the County; services equipment with fuel; Operates front end loaders under two (2) cubic yards, fork lifts to carry dirt and trees, skid steer loader with attachments, or a six (6) wheel truck with wing plow; Operates single chassis trucks (4 wheel or 6 wheel), and small rollers; Operates power machinery such as cement mixers, belt conveyors, air compressors, sod cutters, chain saws and pumping equipment; Performs manual work such as loading or unloading vehicles, shoveling snow, removing debris from roadside, clearing sewer basins and lines; Carries out routine maintenance and other repair work on assigned vehicles; Sets flags and barricades; participates generally in the work of the labor or maintenance crew. May act as a lead worker of a small group of laborers.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS
Good knowledge of the operation, maintenance and use of dump and flatbed trucks and of the less complex automotive equipment; good knowledge of motor vehicle regulations governing the use of equipment; good knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary in the operation of equipment; skill in the operation of less complex automotive equipment; ability to make emergency repairs and to assist in making general repairs to motor vehicle equipment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.
