English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher
Grade Level: Secondary School - Middle School and/or High School (as assigned)
Reports To: Building Principal
Position Summary
East Cleveland City School District is seeking a dedicated and student-centered English Language Arts (ELA) Teacher to join our instructional team. The ideal candidate will deliver engaging, standards-aligned instruction that promotes literacy, critical thinking, and effective communication while supporting the academic and social-emotional growth of all students.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Develops and implements an English Language Arts curriculum aligned with district goals and Ohio standards
- Plans and delivers engaging lessons in grammar, composition, vocabulary, literature, creative writing, and communication
- Creates a classroom environment that is safe, respectful, and conducive to learning
- Differentiates instruction to meet the needs of diverse learners, including students with special needs
- Facilitates critical analysis through discussion of literature, media, and informational texts
- Assesses student progress regularly and adjusts instructional strategies to improve achievement
- Prepares students for district and state assessments by aligning instruction to tested standards
- Maintains accurate records for attendance, grading, and reporting in accordance with district procedures and applicable laws
- Encourages parent and family involvement through effective communication
- Manages student behavior in accordance with school and district policies
- Collaborates with colleagues and participates in faculty meetings, committees, and professional learning
- Selects, requisitions, and maintains instructional materials and supplies
- Engages in ongoing professional development to remain current in instructional practices
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of current instructional strategies, educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction
- Knowledge of English grammar, literature, and language usage
- Ability to analyze student data and support instructional planning
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state education laws
- Ability to use computer systems and instructional technology
- Strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
- Commitment to professional growth and reflective practice
Additional Information
- Performs other related duties as assigned by the Principal or district administrators
- Uses standard office and instructional equipment
- Travel to district buildings and professional meetings may be required
- Must possess the physical and mental ability to perform essential job functions
Qualifications
- Valid Ohio teaching license in English Language Arts (Grades 4 - 9, 7 - 12, or appropriate licensure area)
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution (Master's degree preferred)
- Knowledge of Ohio Learning Standards for ELA
- Strong classroom management and instructional skills
- Commitment to equity, high expectations, and continuous improvement
- Ability to build positive relationships with students and families
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience teaching in an urban school district
- Experience with culturally responsive teaching practices
- Familiarity with data-driven instruction and literacy interventions
- Willingness to contribute to school culture and district initiatives
Term of Employment Salary
189 days per year ECEA Master Agreement
2026-2027 school year (August 12, 2026)
