The Park District is currently recruiting for a Pump Mechanic in the Public Works Administration Department of the Operations Division. This on-site position will be headquartered at South County Corp Yard in Castro Valley, CA. The hiring pools established from this recruitment will be used to fill the current vacancies and additional vacancies that may occur during the one-year life of the hiring pools.

Our Values
Under general supervision of the Water Utilities Maintenance Supervisor, performs skilled pump system maintenance and administrative work in the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment such as wastewater lift stations, submersible pumps, stormwater pumps, and water pumps operated by the District for park district facilities; and performs related duties as assigned. In the absence of the Water Utilities Maintenance Supervisor this position will report to the Division Chief, Manager or designee.

Any combination of education and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities would be:
Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade,
AND
Experience: Three (3) year’s experience as a Pump Mechanic or three (3) years of performing equivalent experience in water/wastewater.
License or Certificate: Possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License is a condition of initial and continued employment in this classification.

AFSCME: East Bay Regional Parks Employees, Local 2428, American Federation of State, County & Municipal Employees (AFSCME), AFL-CIO, represents this classification. Wages, hours, and other terms of conditions of employment are covered in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Park District and Local 2428. The probationary period for this classification is nine (9) months.
Internal Promotions: Placement shall be made at the first step in the salary range for the new position (Step A) unless the salary rate at Step A of the new position is less than a 5% increase. In such instances, the employee will be placed at a step in the new salary range that ensures at least a 5% increase.

- Plans, coordinates, carries out, and evaluates preventive maintenance schedules for all designated mechanical equipment.
- Inspect, diagnose and perform major and minor repair work on motors, pumps, hydraulic equipment, compressors, controls, valves, and related equipment.
- Perform routine and preventative maintenance on pumps, motors, engines, and compressors.
- Repair wastewater lift stations, storm drain stations, and water transfer pumps.
- Operates a variety of diagnostic instruments and a variety of hand, electric, and air-driven tools.
- Tests, troubleshoots, services, and repairs mechanical equipment.
- Inspects, adjusts, and replaces necessary units and related parts in the performance of repair and maintenance work.
- Fabricate and modify parts and equipment as necessary.
- Evaluates the status of mechanical equipment and performs or schedules needed repairs.
- Conducts various analyses and inspections of mechanical systems to determine means of maintenance, repair, or replacement.
- Initiates and purchases equipment, parts, and supplies used for mechanical system maintenance.
- Provides emergency field assistance as needed and appropriate.
- Assists in the preparation of bid specifications for mechanical equipment.
- Maintains records and prepares reports and other specialized maintenance records of equipment and mechanical equipment.

- Thorough knowledge of the operation/repair/maintenance of pumps, motors, valves, machine shop equipment, and crane operations;
- Gas and diesel engines, hydraulics, generators, and welding;
- Hazards and safety precautions common to municipal maintenance and repair activities;
- Practices, methods, materials, and tools used in modern equipment maintenance;
- Electronic motor controls and telemetry/SCADA equipment.
- Skill in the use and operation of mechanical testing instruments, mechanic's tools including jacks, hydraulic lifts, hoists, cranes, air tools, and other tools required for repairs and routine maintenance of pumps, lift stations, and valves;
- Skill in electronic diagnostic equipment and telemetry/SCADA equipment; personal computer, calculator, phone; mobile or portable radio.
- Ability to diagnose and repair a variety of mechanical problems with submersible pumps, motors, end suction pumps, ANSI pumps, rotary pumps, and associated components;
- Establish and maintain effective preventive maintenance programs, policies, and procedures;
- Maintain effective accounting procedures;
- Carry out assigned projects to their completion;
- Communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees;
- Supervisors, vendors, and the public.
- Must pass a Level 1 Background Check.
- May be required to work unusual hours, nights, weekends, holidays, and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions.
- Depending on work location and assignment, the ability to use a respirator in the performance of their work. In accordance with CAL OSHA respirator regulations, Title 8, 5144 (c) (g) (l) (A) (l.), the incumbent shall not wear facial hair (e.g. beards, long sideburns, etc.) that impede the effectiveness of the respirator.
- When not wearing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), must wear a Park District uniform.
