Position Overview
Are you passionate about food security and supporting vulnerable populations? The East Bay Community Action Program is seeking a dedicated Food Pantry Coordinator to lead the day-to-day operations of our East Providence food pantry and provide critical support across our Newport and Tiverton locations. In this role, you'll coordinate volunteer efforts, serve clients with dignity and compassion, and help ensure that families in our community have access to nutritious food. This is a hands-on position where you'll make a direct, meaningful impact every day.
About the Role
As Food Pantry Coordinator, you will report to the Manager of LIHEAP/Safety Net within our Family Development Department. You'll manage volunteer recruitment, training, and scheduling while providing direct client services and maintaining pantry operations that meet all health and safety standards. This hybrid-ineligible position requires presence at our Bullocks Point location in East Providence, with travel to other pantry sites and food vendors as needed.
Core Responsibilities
Pantry Operations Support (25%)
- Partner with the Food Pantry Specialist to coordinate weekly deliveries from the RI Community Food Bank, manage Peapod orders, and organize community donations
- Maintain a clean, safe, and pest-controlled pantry environment in full compliance with RI Department of Health standards
- Ensure all EBCAP food pantries meet licensing and accreditation requirements
- Collaborate with internal and external partners to enhance the nutritional value and cultural relevance of food offerings
- Prepare accurate monthly reports for RICFB and Commodities programs
Volunteer Recruitment & Management (35%)
- Develop and implement volunteer recruitment strategies in partnership with Communications and management staff
- Conduct volunteer orientations and training on food safety, client interactions, and pantry procedures
- Manage volunteer applications, maintain databases, and track volunteer hours
- Assign volunteers to tasks that match their skills and pantry needs
- Schedule volunteer shifts to ensure consistent coverage
- Provide ongoing support, training, and recognition to foster volunteer satisfaction and engagement
Client Service (35%)
- Enroll new clients according to eligibility requirements and monitor visits for compliance
- Utilize computer database systems for accurate client enrollment and tracking
- Assist clients in selecting nutritionally appropriate foods tailored to their needs
- Prepare and organize food bags and boxes for delivery, with special attention to clients with transportation or mobility challenges
Administrative Duties (5%)
- Prepare accurate monthly reports as required
- Complete other duties as assigned by your supervisor
What We're Looking For
Required Experience & Knowledge
- Experience working with economically vulnerable populations and/or seniors
- Knowledge of food pantry eligibility requirements
- Familiarity with available wrap-around services and community resources
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Applications and database/data entry systems
Essential Skills & Abilities
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Compassionate, respectful approach to working with vulnerable populations
- Ability to travel among multiple pantry locations and vendor sites
- Physical capability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, stoop, and crouch throughout shifts
- Ability to lift at least 50 pounds using proper techniques or with a two-person lift (reasonable accommodations available)
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in volunteer coordination or program management
- Knowledge of food security issues in the East Bay area
- Familiarity with food safety protocols and best practices
- Bilingual abilities (English/Spanish)
