About The Role
East Bay Community Action Program is seeking a detail-oriented Billing Specialist to join our Finance/Billing team. Under the supervision of the Billing Manager, you'll play a crucial role in ensuring timely claim submissions and payment processing for our medical, behavioral health, and dental services.
What You'll Do
- Claims Management: Prepare, review, and submit claims using billing software (primarily electronic processing)
- Insurance Coordination: Obtain referrals, pre-authorizations, and verify eligibility and benefits for requested services
- Payment Monitoring: Follow up on unpaid claims, review Explanation of Benefits (EOB), and verify insurance payments for accuracy
- Problem Resolution: Research and appeal denied claims, resolve payment discrepancies, and respond to patient and insurance inquiries
- Compliance: Ensure all billing practices follow managed care contracts, licensing requirements, and State/Federal regulations
- Documentation: Maintain organized records of all billing and collection transactions
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- 2-4 years of medical billing experience
- Medical billing certification or equivalent
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
- Knowledge of CPT and ICD-10 coding, HCFA 1500, and UB-04
- Understanding of billing rules, regulations, and medical terminology
- Working knowledge of billing software and electronic medical records
- Certified coder certification is a plus
- Strong customer service skills for patient and insurance company interactions
- Excellent problem-solving abilities to research and resolve discrepancies, denials, and appeals
- Ability to multitask, prioritize, and manage time efficiently
- Team-oriented with ability to triage priorities and handle conflict professionally
- Strong analytical skills to strategize solutions
This is primarily an administrative role requiring the ability to
- Operate computer and office equipment
- Lift up to 25 pounds using proper techniques
- Remain stationary approximately 50% of the time
- Bend, reach, file, sit, stand, and move around the facility
- Communicate effectively with clients, staff, and external representatives
