This role manages drivers, monitors route performance, resolves service issues, and ensures compliance with all municipal contract requirements. The Route Manager plays a critical role in maintaining strong customer relationships with municipalities and ensuring operational excellence in the field.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage daily residential and municipal trash collection routes, ensuring on-time and accurate service.
- Supervise, coach, and support drivers, including performance management, training, and safety enforcement.
- Monitor route efficiency, make adjustments as needed, and develop improvements to reduce downtime and increase productivity.
- Review and address service issues, missed stops, complaints, and route exceptions; provide prompt resolution.
- Ensure compliance with all municipal contracts, service-level agreements, and company policies.
- Conduct ride-alongs, route audits, and field evaluations to maintain safe and efficient operations.
- Coordinate with dispatch, customer service, and maintenance to resolve operational needs and equipment issues.
- Track driver attendance, timekeeping, and adherence to policies.
- Enforce DOT, OSHA, and company safety standards; lead safety meetings and promote a strong safety culture.
- Prepare reports related to route performance, productivity, service issues, and contract compliance.
- Assist with driver hiring, onboarding, and ongoing development.
- Support planning for route changes, bulk pickups, seasonal volume shifts, and special municipal projects.
Qualifications
- Experience: Minimum of 2–3 years managing municipal or residential trash routes (waste industry experience required).
- Strong understanding of residential collection operations, routing practices, and municipal service requirements.
- Knowledge of DOT regulations, safety protocols, and waste industry equipment.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with shifting priorities.
- Proficiency with route management systems, GPS/telematics, and basic computer tools.
- Valid driver’s license (CDL preferred but not required).
Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform fieldwork, including climbing in/out of trucks, standing, walking, and working outdoors in various weather.

- Combination of office and field work, including exposure to operational hazards, traffic, weather, and noise typical of waste collection environments.
