Earth Science Systems, LLC (ESS) has an immediate full-time opening for a skilled technician to support prototyping and commercial manufacturing of geophysical instrumentation. ESS is a small engineering company focused on research, development, and instrumentation for infrastructure and subsurface directional drilling applications.
This role is hands-on and multidisciplinary. The ideal candidate is comfortable working with both mechanical and electronic systems and can independently assemble and test complex production hardware.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with a small interdisciplinary team of electrical, mechanical, and software engineers to build and support geophysical instruments
- Assemble products from mechanical drawings and bills of materials with minimal supervision after initial training
- Integrate and assemble electronic hardware, including cable harnessing, connectors, and subsystems
- Fabricate prototype components, fixtures, and test setups without complete CAD documentation
- Read and interpret mechanical drawings and electrical schematics for production efforts
- Perform basic electrical debugging, including voltage checks, signal tracing, and physical inspection
- Use tools such as multimeters, power supplies, and oscilloscopes
- Operate shop equipment including drills, drill press, band saw, small mill, grinder, and other hand tools
- Support inventory tracking, ERP/MRP usage, and material coordination
- Order and track components from vendors based on bills of materials
- Communicate with vendors regarding order status and resolve supply issues
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment
Required Skills and Experience
- Strong mechanical and electronic assembly skills
- Proficiency in soldering, crimping, and cable assembly
- Ability to read and work from engineering drawings and schematics
- Hands-on experience with prototyping and fabrication
- Familiarity with electronic test equipment
- Solid computer skills and ability to work within ERP/MRP systems
- Strong problem-solving ability and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, small-team light manufacturing environment
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds
- Comfortable bending, squatting, climbing ladders, and working around shop equipment
Minimum Qualifications
- U.S. Citizenship required (no dual citizenship)
- Associate degree or equivalent technical experience
- 7 years of relevant hands-on experience
- Strong professional references
