Early Scholars Speech and Debate
Early Scholars Speech and Debate provides academic and enrichment services to students in elementary and middle school. Our set of unique services take place outside of school hours and are designed to help students achieve success in a variety of areas of study. Early Scholars began providing debate enrichment services in 2016, with students participating in the NYC Urban debate league tournaments, the largest city-wide debate league in the nation. Our scholars continue their three-year winning streak as the 2018 champions.
Early Scholars, an academically-oriented, educational tutoring service located in Bayside, Queens, is currently seeking a part time, on-site Speech and Debate teacher to fill a position in our Fresh Meadows, NY location. Hours will be Weekday evenings or Saturdays from 10:30-12:30pm.
Job Description/ Responsibilities
- Develop and update debate curriculum to ensure students stay competitive.
- Deliver lessons in debate theory and specific debate topics to a group of 10-12 students one to three times per week.
- Review and understand topic, relevant vocabulary, theory, practices, strategies and both sides of the debate topic prior to each class.
- Develop ice breakers and warm-up activities for students.
- Teach the principles of argumentation, the main styles of debate, and research techniques.
- Demonstrate expertise in and a genuine passion for teaching.
- Motivate students through effective communication.
- Create and provide each student with detailed feedback on class performance.
- Implement principles of effective classroom management.
- Maintain communication with administrators and parents about student progress.
Preferred Requirements:
- Exceptional public speaking skills, a great work ethic and proven critical thinking skills.
- An enthusiasm for teaching and a keen understanding of classroom management principles.
- Successful candidates have earned a bachelor’s degree in Theater, Communications, Journalism, English, Pre-Law or a prior background in debate.
- Experience working with children in an academic setting is preferred, but not required.
- Public Forum and Extemporaneous speech experience preferred but not required.
