Special Education Preschool Teacher (LTS)
RISE Program
Assignment Period: September 21, 2026 – April 16, 2027 (End date is subject to change.)
This Long-Term Substitute (LTS) assignment will cover two separate positions during the assignment period:
- Position 1: September 21, 2026 – November 16, 2026
- Position 2: Begins immediately upon the conclusion of the first assignment, when the second staff member commences their leave, and continues through April 16, 2027.
Note: There will be no break in employment between these two assignments. The Long-Term Substitute will transition directly from the first position to the second, maintaining continuous employment throughout the assignment period.
Long Term Substitutes receive a daily rate of $125.00 for the first 20 days of work. Starting on the 21st day, they are compensated at the daily rate for either a Bachelor's ($346.55) or Master's ($372.42) level, based on their qualifications, for the remainder of their assignment.
The Special Education Teacher will provide special education services for typically developing as well as disabled students in preschool. The Special Education Teacher reports directly to the Principal of the School and the Director of Special Education, and is expected to work closely with all district personnel to provide high quality instruction to our diverse student population. S/he will provide a safe, equitable, culturally responsive learning environment with high expectations for all students.
Responsibilities:
- Create a welcoming, inclusive, culturally responsive classroom environment that is conducive to student’s learning and their ability to comfortably share their authentic selves.
- Support students with Moderate to Severe Autism Spectrum and Communication Disorders.
- Provide individual and small group instruction to students, as appropriate.
- Provide large group instruction in an inclusive environment
- Administer special education assessments/evaluations to comprehensively determine student need and/or eligibility for special education
- Write comprehensive IEPs for caseload including measurable goals, detailed PLEPs etc,
- Experience with administering assessments and making eligibility determination
- Support students in maintaining safe behaviors across settings, including the use of blocking and reinforcement procedures as well as physical restraint, as needed.
- Run Discrete Trial Training programs under the supervision of the BCBA.
- Run consistent behavior support plans, including with the use of token economy and other reinforcement systems.
- Support students with significant communication challenges, including within the use of Assistive and Augmentative Communication Systems as well as lower technology systems such as PECS or basic sign language, in consultation with the Speech and Language Pathologist.
- Design and implement modifications to school curricula, differentiated instruction, and positive behavior support programs as needed.
- Support and instruct students with activities of daily living, including eating, dressing, and toileting (to include diaper changes and toilet training).
- Evaluate student abilities and progress through a variety of formal and informal assessments, including to determine special education eligibility; monitor student progress and adjust instruction accordingly.
- Chair all annual review and IEP progress meetings; participate in evaluation and eligibility meetings, as appropriate.
- Participate in ongoing professional development activities, to include Safety-Care training, including the use of physical restraint.
- Participate in collaborative consultation with special education teams, including service providers as well as Administrators.
- Maintain accurate, complete, and correct student records as required by law and district policies.
- Maintain and build relationships and communication pathways with parents and other community liaisons.
- Abide by state statutes, school committee policies, regulations, and WPS Employee Handbook.
- Attend all required meetings and perform duties as assigned by the Special Education Director and Building Administrator(s).
- Oversee paraprofessional staff in supporting students and in data collection and entry.
- All other duties as required by the Principal or WPS Administration.
- Implement of behavior support plans for students
- Experience working in a diverse educational setting, including the ability to work successfully with students, colleagues, and families from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.
- Competence with technology tools and platforms, including Google applications
Qualifications & Skill Set:
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university required; Master’s degree preferred
- Required Licensure: Current Massachusetts's DESE Certification in Moderate Special Needs for corresponding grade levels (PreK-8), Severe License preferred, Early Childhood Education (Prek-2)
