Early Childhood Inclusion Support Worker

PURPOSE: Reporting to the LLE Childcare Manager, the Early Childhood Inclusion Support Worker (1:1) provides individualized developmental, behavioural, social-emotional and physical support to an identified child within Le'lum'uy'lh Daycare. Working collaboratively with Early Childhood Educators, families and external service providers, the position implements individualized support strategies and care plans that promote inclusion, participation, independence and optimal child development within an inclusive early learning environment. The position supports the child's successful participation in daily routines, learning experiences and peer interactions while fostering a safe, inclusive, nurturing and culturally grounded environment. This is a full-time permanent position based primarily at Le'lum'uy'lh Daycare, with minimal local travel required.

Responsibilities

Provide Individualized Inclusion Support:

  • Provide one-to-one support in accordance with the child's Individual Support Plan (ISP) and established daycare program goals
  • Implement individualized strategies that support the child's developmental, behavioural, social-emotional, communication and physical needs
  • Facilitate the child's active participation in daily routines, learning experiences, outdoor play, meals, transitions, community outings and peer interactions
  • Promote independence by supporting the development of communication and self-regulation skills using developmentally appropriate practices and positive guidance techniques
  • Adapt activities, materials and the learning environment to support inclusion, engagement and successful participation
  • Observe, monitor and respond proactively to the child's behavioural, emotional and sensory needs, adjusting support strategies as appropriate
  • Foster the child's sense of belonging, privacy, safety and overall well-being
  • Other related duties as required

Promote Safe, Positive & Healthy Child Development

  • Integrate Cowichan culture, language, values and traditions into daily interactions and learning experiences
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, nurturing and culturally grounded early learning environment that supports the child's well-being and successful participation
  • Comply with daycare licensing requirements, health and safety standards, organizational policies and established support plans
  • Provide continuous supervision of the assigned child and respond immediately and appropriately to safety concerns, medical needs and emergencies
  • Assist with personal care, including toileting, diapering, feeding and other activities of daily living while maintaining the child's dignity
  • Support positive behaviour and emotional well-being through relationship-based practices, positive guidance and developmentally appropriate strategies
  • Maintain a clean, organized and safe early learning environment, including assisting with classroom setup, materials and general housekeeping duties as required
  • Other related duties as required

Collaboration With Child Care Team

  • Collaborate with the Childcare Manager, Early Childhood Educators and external service providers to support inclusive programming and the implementation of individualized support strategies
  • Assist in delivering developmentally appropriate learning experiences that promote the child's participation, independence and overall development
  • Share observations regarding the child's participation, progress and emerging needs to support ongoing planning and continuous improvement
  • Participate in team meetings, case planning and support planning as required
  • Foster respectful, collaborative relationships with families, colleagues and external service providers to support the child's success
  • Other related duties as required

Administrative Support

  • Maintain accurate, objective documentation regarding the child's progress, observations and significant incidents
  • Maintain daily communication logs documenting activities, participation and progress
  • Assist families during daily sign-in and sign-out procedures as required
  • Document and immediately report safety concerns, injuries and incidents in accordance with organizational procedures
  • Maintain confidentiality of child and family information in accordance with organizational policies
  • Participate in staff meetings, training and professional development opportunities
  • Other related duties as required

Qualifications

Basic ECE

Additional Qualifications

  • Valid British Columbia Early Childhood Educator Assistant certificate required
  • Early Childhood Education specialized certifications considered an asset
  • Registered Behaviour Technician certification preferred
  • Experience working in a licensed childcare setting preferred
  • Experience supporting children with neurodivergent needs preferred
  • Valid BC Driver's License and access to a reliable vehicle considered an asset
  • Current First Aid certification, including Child Safe and Infant CPR required
  • FOODSAFE Level 1 or equivalent required
  • WHMIS certification preferred
  • Satisfactory Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector clearance required

Required Experience

  • Knowledge and understanding of Cowichan Tribes culture, values, traditions, lands and the Hul'q'umi'num' language, or a willingness to learn
  • Knowledge of child development, inclusive early learning practices and evidence-informed approaches to early childhood education
  • Knowledge of developmental delays, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), sensory processing differences and other exceptionalities
  • Knowledge of positive behaviour support strategies and trauma-informed practices
  • Knowledge of BC Child Care Licensing Regulations and the ability to maintain compliance within daily operations
  • Ability to build positive, respectful and trusting relationships with children, families, colleagues and external service providers
  • Strong observation, documentation, communication, organizational and teamwork skills
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, maintain confidentiality and uphold professional boundaries
  • Ability to use augmentative communication devices and other communication modalities to support children's communication, participation and independence
  • Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including sitting on the floor with full range of motion, bending, kneeling and stooping to children's eye level, standing and walking for extended periods and lifting to 50 lbs.

Salary & Benefits

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS: Cowichan Tribes offers excellent health and dental benefits and pension plan, with benefits eligibility beginning after one month of employment and pension plan eligibility after three months. The position includes paid training, paid vacation and paid sick leave. Depending on experience, the position starts at $32.97 - $34.58 per hour.

Compensation includes the $6.00 per hour British Columbia Early Childhood Educator Wage Enhancement Initiative, funded by the Ministry of Education & Child Care and is contingent upon continued program eligibility and funding availability.
