Production & Scheduling
- Supervise daily bindery operations including cutting, folding, stitching, perfect binding, saddle stitching, drilling, padding, inserting, trimming, shrink-wrapping, mailing prep, and kitting.
- Execute production schedules to meet deadlines while maximizing labor and equipment efficiency.
- Coordinate workflow with pressroom, prepress, mail, and shipping departments.
- Adjust staffing and priorities based on job requirements, run lengths, and delivery commitments.
- Monitor WIP and ensure smooth job flow through all finishing stages.
Leadership & Staffing
- Lead, train, and motivate bindery staff including operators, helpers, and temporary employees.
- Assign work, manage shift coverage, and approve timecards.
- Conduct onboarding, cross-training, and performance evaluations.
- Enforce company policies, safety rules, and standard operating procedures.
- Address employee issues promptly and professionally.
Quality Control
- Ensure all finished products meet customer specifications, quality standards, and postal requirements where applicable.
- Perform first-piece and in-process quality checks.
- Identify and correct quality issues such as trim, fold accuracy, binding strength, and inserts.
- Work with Quality and Production teams on root-cause analysis and corrective actions.
Equipment & Maintenance
- Oversee proper setup, operation, and care of bindery equipment.
- Coordinate preventative maintenance and minor repairs with maintenance personnel.
- Ensure operators are trained on equipment safety and best practices.
- Report equipment issues and downtime accurately.
Safety & Compliance
- Maintain a safe working environment in compliance with OSHA and company safety standards.
- Conduct safety meetings and enforce lockout/tagout and machine guarding requirements.
- Ensure housekeeping standards are maintained throughout the department.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve efficiency, reduce waste, and increase throughput..
- Track and report key metrics such as productivity, spoilage, rework, and on-time delivery.
Qualifications
Required
- 3–5 years of bindery or finishing experience in a commercial printing environment.
- Prior supervisory or lead experience in manufacturing or printing.
- Strong knowledge of bindery equipment and finishing processes.
- Ability to read and understand job tickets, specifications, and production schedules.
- Strong organizational, communication, and leadership skills.
Preferred
- Experience in web press and high-volume commercial printing operations.
- Knowledge of mailing, inserting, and USPS requirements.
- Experience with production tracking or MIS systems.
- Mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting skills.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Frequent walking, bending, reaching, and manual dexterity.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Work Environment
- Manufacturing/production floor with exposure to noise, moving machinery, and paper dust.
- May require overtime, weekends, or shift work based on production demands.
