Job Summary
The Revenue Staff Accountant will be responsible for supporting the accounting team with all revenue-related accounting tasks. This position will focus on the billing and invoicing process, journal entries, revenue recognition, account reconciliation, and ensuring internal controls are followed. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of revenue and cost of goods sold (COGS) accounting, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to work collaboratively with other departments to ensure accurate and timely financial reporting.
Key Responsibilities
Billing and Invoicing:
- Oversee the timely and accurate issuance of freight in and freight out invoices. Ensure that revenue and COGS are appropriately captured during the invoicing process, collaborating with shipping and sales teams to ensure accuracy.
Journal Entries:
- Prepare and post journal entries related to revenue, including sales, returns, allowances, and cost of goods sold. Ensure all journal entries are recorded in compliance with accounting policies and deadlines.
Revenue Recognition:
- Ensure accurate revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP (Generally Accepted Accounting Principles) and company policy. Monitor revenue-related transactions and ensure they align with proper timing, documentation, and criteria for recognition.
Accounts Reconciliation:
- Reconcile revenue-related accounts, including accounts receivable, deferred revenue, deferred COGS, and unbilled revenue. Perform regular reconciliations to identify discrepancies and ensure the accuracy of financial records.
Collaboration with Internal Teams:
- Work closely with internal teams, such as sales, shipping, and finance, to ensure proper recording and reporting of revenue. Proactively engage with other departments to resolve issues and improve revenue-related processes.
Internal Controls and Compliance:
- Assist in implementing and monitoring internal controls to ensure the accuracy and integrity of revenue transactions. Propose improvements to processes that will enhance efficiency and compliance with accounting standards and company policies.
Reporting and Analysis:
- Assist with the preparation of detailed reports and analyses related to revenue and COGS. Help identify trends, variances, and discrepancies, providing insights to senior leadership for decision-making.
Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process enhancements, both within the revenue accounting function and across departments, to improve efficiency, accuracy, and timeliness of revenue-related transactions.
Requirements
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field.
Experience:
- 2–3 years of experience in revenue recognition or related accounting roles is preferred but not mandatory.
- Experience with accounting software such as QuickBooks, SAP, or similar systems is required.
- Strong familiarity with GAAP revenue recognition principles is a plus.
Skills & Abilities:
- Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel, including knowledge of formulas, pivot tables, and data analysis tools.
- Strong interpersonal skills, with the ability to communicate clearly and effectively with internal stakeholders across departments.
- Attention to detail, with a focus on ensuring the accuracy of financial data and identifying discrepancies.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, especially in reconciling revenue-related discrepancies.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong initiative and willingness to take ownership of processes and drive continuous improvement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with the accounting aspects of freight and logistics billing processes.
