What are the responsibilities and job description for the Intern, Systems Engineering-Fargo position at Dynon Avionics Inc?
Systems Engineering Intern
Dynon Avionics – Fargo, ND
Summer Internship
Position Overview
Dynon Avionics is seeking a Systems Engineering Intern to support the development, organization, and evolution of system engineering artifacts for integrated avionics products.
This role focuses on system requirements development, traceability management, and systems documentation, while also providing exposure to system design and architecture activities across multiple avionics programs.
The intern will work closely with systems engineers, software engineers, hardware engineers, and test engineers to ensure system requirements are well-defined, traceable, and aligned with the intended system architecture and implementation.
A significant portion of this role involves working within requirements management tools such as Jama to organize, refine, and maintain system requirements as products evolve. The intern will also help reverse engineer requirements from existing documentation and test procedures, while supporting the development of system design artifacts that describe how system components interact and operate together.
This position is well suited for students interested in systems engineering, complex system architecture, and aerospace product development.
Responsibilities
System Requirements Development
Assist in authoring and refining system and subsystem requirements for avionics systems.
Ensure requirements are clear, structured, testable, and properly scoped.
Help decompose higher-level system requirements into lower-level functional requirements.
Support systems engineers in maintaining consistent requirement structure and formatting.
Requirements Traceability and Management
Maintain requirement traceability across system, software, hardware, and verification artifacts.
Manage requirement relationships within Jama or similar requirements management tools.
Update requirement linkages as requirements evolve across multiple development programs.
Ensure system requirements remain consistent with system architecture and implementation.
Engineering Artifact Development and Maintenance
Create and maintain systems engineering artifacts, including:
requirement sets
traceability structures
verification mappings
implementation artifacts
Assist in organizing and maintaining system-level documentation used in engineering development and certification activities.
Documentation Integration
Tie system requirements to existing engineering documentation, including:
user manuals
interface documentation
design documentation
test procedures
Help ensure documented system behavior is accurately reflected in system requirements.
Reverse Engineering Requirements
Analyze existing test procedures, documentation, and implemented system behavior to derive or reconstruct missing system requirements.
Assist in translating implementation artifacts into structured system requirements.
Support efforts to improve requirement coverage for legacy or evolving systems.
System Design Support
Assist systems engineers in developing system design artifacts, including functional diagrams and system interaction descriptions.
Help document how system components interact, including displays, sensors, navigation sources, and avionics subsystems.
Support the development of high-level system architecture descriptions used by engineering teams.
Participate in discussions about system behavior, interfaces, and architecture decisions.
