We are actively seeking a Project Manager to join a leading underground utility construction company that builds and maintains essential infrastructure across California. In this high-impact role, you will oversee complex field projects involving water, power, gas, telecom, sewer, and storm systems, driving schedules, safety, and budgets from planning through close-out. You will guide crews, collaborate closely with leadership, and serve as a trusted partner to customers who rely on rapid response and high-quality work. If you thrive in the field, enjoy balancing technical detail with team leadership, and want a chance to build a long-term career with an employee-owned firm, apply today and call Aileen at 888-303-5627.
Why You’ll Love This Role
  • Lead projects that keep critical utilities running safely and reliably for communities throughout the Central Valley.
  • Enjoy strong support from divisional leadership, field supervisors, and a culture that genuinely prioritizes safety as a core value.
  • Grow your career with a stable, well-established contractor operating multiple locations across California.
What You’ll Do
  • Steer large, complex underground utility projects from start to finish, ensuring work is delivered safely, on time, and within budget.
  • Lead and coordinate project teams by assigning tasks, monitoring progress, and maintaining accurate project status documentation.
  • Build and maintain a coordinated yard schedule so crews, equipment, and materials are used efficiently across multiple jobs.
  • Partner on bids and estimates by providing project insight that supports smart growth and profitable work mix.
  • Oversee billing and job close-out processes, reviewing costs, resolving coding issues, and ensuring contract requirements are fully met.
  • Review, validate, and process change orders and related timesheets so project scope changes are captured and billed correctly.
  • Coordinate with subcontractors, vendors, and owner-operators to ensure agreements align with company standards and project needs.
  • Prepare timely, accurate month-end revenue projections in collaboration with your project teams and Division Manager.
  • Participate in staffing efforts by helping select qualified field personnel and supporting a strong onboarding experience.
  • Nurture long-term customer relationships by responding quickly to requests, resolving issues, and proactively communicating project status.
  • Champion the company’s safety program by holding foremen, crews, and subcontractors accountable for safe work practices on every job.
  • Partner with senior management on personnel topics including leaves, discipline, and policy adherence.
  • Attend internal and client meetings, and collaborate with other managers to share labor and equipment resources across the division.
  • Maintain regular job site presence, working closely with Superintendents and Foremen to stay current on field conditions and work progress.
To Be Successful in This Role, You Bring:
  • 5 years of underground utility construction experience managing projects involving water, power, gas, telecom, sewer, or storm systems.
  • Bachelor of Science in Construction Management or related field preferred, or equivalent industry experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of construction safety, health, environmental regulations, and applicable industry orders.
  • Valid California driver’s license in good standing and the ability to operate a company vehicle.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to quickly learn company-specific systems and tools.
  • Confident interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively with customers, internal teams, and external agencies.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills, including mentoring, coaching, and guiding field teams toward shared goals.
  • Solid math and estimating skills, including calculating footage and material quantities for underground work.
  • Strong planning and organizational habits, with the capacity to manage priorities and multiple projects simultaneously.
  • A systematic, solutions-focused approach to problem-solving, especially when navigating changing conditions in the field.
