What are the responsibilities and job description for the Senior Engineering Reviewer – Civil, Structural, or MEP position at Dynamic Engineering Consultants, PLLC?
Part-time (about 20 hours/week) • Remote • Independent contract (1099)
Good design review catches problems while they are still lines on a drawing, not change orders in the field. We are looking for experienced engineers to be a second set of senior eyes on our civil, structural, and MEP work before it goes to permit and construction. If you have spent a career designing or checking drawings and want steady, flexible review work without the pressure of running projects, we would like to talk.
About Us
Dynamic Engineering Consultants (DEC) is a multi-discipline engineering and testing firm headquartered in Sulphur Springs, Texas. Since 2004, we have grown from a geotechnical and structural practice into a full-service firm that gives projects a solid start, from the ground up: civil, geotechnical, structural, and MEP engineering, topographic surveying and mapping, construction materials testing and QA/QC, and construction management services. Our principal engineer is licensed in Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Colorado, and New Mexico.
We are growing. We have invested in a new office and shop, our own fleet and drilling equipment, and a drafting team that works overnight, and we are adding experienced reviewers so we can take on larger projects across a wider region. Your reviews go straight to the engineers who use them.
About the Role
This is a review-only subcontract role. You will check work prepared by our design team; you will not seal drawings or serve as engineer of record. Our engineers of record keep that responsibility, and our professional liability policy covers your review work. We welcome specialists: you do not need to cover all three disciplines. A strong structural-only or MEP-only reviewer is exactly what we want.
A year in, success looks like this: our drawing sets reach permit with fewer plan-check comments, coordination conflicts are caught in the office instead of the field, and our staff engineers have learned from your markups.
What You Will Do
- Review drawing sets, calculations, and specifications at design milestones for code compliance, constructability, and completeness.
- Write clear, prioritized markups and comment logs (critical, required, suggested) that designers can act on without a follow-up call.
- Check coordination across disciplines, such as MEP penetrations through structure or site utilities against building connections.
- Back-check responses to your comments and to plan-check comments from building departments.
- Talk through significant comments with our engineers on short calls so the lessons stick.
- Point out recurring issues so we can improve our standard details and checklists.
Required
- 10 years of design or review experience in at least one discipline: civil/site, structural, mechanical/plumbing, or electrical.
- Experience doing formal QA/QC or plan review of drawing sets prepared by others.
- Working knowledge of current US codes for your discipline (for example IBC/IRC, ASCE 7, ACI/AISC/NDS, IMC/IPC/IECC, NEC, or local drainage and utility standards).
- Availability of about 20 hours per week, with typical review turnaround of 3–5 business days.
- Comfortable reviewing and marking up PDFs electronically (Bluebeam or similar).
- Able to work as an independent contractor (1099).
Preferred
- Active PE license in any US state.
- Senior-level review experience in more than one discipline.
- Former municipal plan reviewer, or ICC plans examiner certification.
- Experience with public or institutional projects.
How It Works
- Fully remote, with a flexible schedule built around review deadlines.
- Steady workload of about 20 hours per week, assigned by project.
- Paid hourly as a subcontractor. Rate is based on experience and licensure and discussed on the first call.
- Covered under our professional liability insurance for review work.
- Our process: a short intro call, a paid sample review (about 3 hours), and a conversation with one of our principals.
