Lower School Psychologist


The psychologist will work collaboratively to support and promote healthy social-emotional wellness for students in grades preschool 3 through grade 5.


Primary Responsibilities: 

  • Support and model the spirit of the mission and foundation documents of the Dwight-Englewood School in work with students, faculty, families and administration.

  • Provide skillful support to students to address social-emotional needs.

  • Serve as a resource for teachers and families to foster understanding of the developmental, behavioral and social-emotional health of young children.

  • Serve as a member of the Student Support Team to address student needs and to create cohesive plans to be implemented both at school and at home. 

  • Provide guidance to address school wide issues.

  • Teach Life Skills classes to 4th and 5th grade students.


Specific Duties

Social Emotional Wellness

  • Facilitate social skills groups.

  • Facilitate individual and small group counseling sessions.

  • Develop and implement appropriate curricula in specific grades.

  • Provide short-term individual counseling to students in order to assess concerns and provide appropriate resources to students, teachers and families.

  • Provide crisis intervention when necessary.


Resource 

  • Observe and interact with students in the school environment in order to recommend strategies of support.

  • Work with faculty and families to further develop an understanding of the developmental and social-emotional well being of Lower School students.

  • Collaborate with faculty and families to recommend and implement strategies of support.

  • Collaborate with outside service providers in order to create a cohesive program for individual students.

  • Continue to grow as a professional through internal and external professional development opportunities and participation in school-based learning communities.


Student Support Team

  • Participate in weekly Student Support Team meetings to discuss students and to collaboratively develop strategies to address individual needs as well as wider student issues.

  • Administer standardized and/or informal assessments to gain greater insight about student needs.

  • Interpret neuropsychological and related evaluations.

  • Provide written summaries of evaluations to teachers outlining appropriate strategies of support.

  • Conference with parents in order to help them understand assessments and coordinate strategies of support for school and home. 

  • Monitor rate of progress of recommended home and school-based strategies of support.


Overall Involvement in the DE Community

  • Actively participate in the life of the Lower School community, including supervision of students during non-academic times.

  • Work collaboratively with the Middle and Upper School Psychologists.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

  • Strong understanding of the range of development and learning styles among early childhood and elementary aged children.

  • Experience with “best practices” in the related areas of psychology.

  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills.

  • Facility with technology


Candidates will have the following:

  • Master’s Degree in School Psychology or related field (Required)

  • Minimum of 3-5 years working in school setting (Preferred)

  • Doctorate Degree in Psychology or related field (Preferred)

  • State Certification in School Psychology (Preferred)


Terms of Employment: 

  • Both four or five day schedules will be considered for this position.

  • Salary for this position is based on overall schedule, experience, and degree with a target salary of up to 100K for four days and 125K for five days.

  • Eight hour work days as well as attendance at faculty meetings, division meetings and department meetings.

  • Professional days are considered work days and participation in planned activities is mandatory.
