Position Overview


The Controller plays a critical role in supporting and managing the financial health of the company while ensuring long-term financial stability and security. In this role, you will lead the day-to-day accounting operations, oversee financial planning and analysis, monitor cash flow, and manage financial risks and internal controls.

The Controller will manage and oversee the Accounting team and be responsible for the Finance and Accounting functions across the company’s core businesses. This role also includes reviewing and verifying financial information and partnering closely with Property teams to ensure financial procedures and controls are properly maintained.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare and review monthly financial statements. Financial reporting duties include the timely preparation of financial statements, balance sheets, cash flow reports, budget-to-actual analyses, and variance reports. Analyze financial data and forecast trends, including ratio analyses, and communicate business performance to senior management.
  • Partner with business leaders to conduct Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) and support leadership in developing and implementing financial strategies. Work closely with the CFO on special projects related to process design and optimization. Oversee pro forma development, financial modeling, scenario analysis, and forecasting. Develop reliable cash flow projections to support operating needs and key real estate investment decisions.
  • Collaborate with the CFO and business teams to develop and manage budgets based on historical trends and business forecasts.
  • Manage the property accounting function throughout the real estate lifecycle, including property acquisitions, construction-in-process, capitalization, and property dispositions.
  • Oversee the daily accounting operations to ensure the integrity of financial transactions and records. This includes bank reconciliations, accounts payable, timely payment of invoices, accruals and prepaid expenses, application fee processing, and management of security deposit accounts. Ensure proper revenue recognition and analysis of accounts receivable, and partner with Property teams on eviction processes when necessary. Manage bank loans, including timely payments and compliance with loan covenants.
  • Supervise and lead the Accounting team by recruiting and developing high-performing staff, setting clear performance expectations, mentoring team members, and modeling behaviors aligned with the company’s values.
  • Work with HR and the CFO to manage the payroll process.
  • Track expenses and ensure expense reimbursements comply with company policies and applicable regulations.
  • Assist with audits and financial reviews conducted by third-party auditors.
  • Manage financial deliverables for investors, lenders, tax preparers, and other stakeholders, including preparation of due diligence materials for department leaders, investors, appraisers, and banks.
  • Maintain and strengthen internal controls by evaluating and refining financial policies and procedures. Ensure the integrity of systems, processes, and financial data while maintaining strong fiduciary responsibility. Partner with the CFO to implement procedures that minimize financial risk and ensure compliance with all applicable federal and local regulations.
  • Oversee treasury functions and maintain efficient cash management processes while managing banking relationships.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance or Accounting
  • 10 years of relevant experience, preferably in multifamily property management or real estate
  • Strong experience with Yardi (required)
  • Minimum of 2 years of supervisory or team leadership experience
  • In-depth knowledge of accounting principles, taxation, and financial reporting standards (GAAP)
  • Proven experience managing and developing staff, including goal setting, coaching, and performance management
  • Strong knowledge of general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and accounting systems
  • Advanced spreadsheet and financial modeling skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to work effectively with stakeholders at all levels
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment
  • Solid understanding of real estate industry standards, regulations, and compliance requirements

Salary : $170,000 - $190,000
