What are the responsibilities and job description for the IT Field Technician position at Dutch Miller Auto Group?
At Dutch Miller Auto Group, we pride ourselves on delivering exceptional service to our customers and fostering a dynamic, supportive environment for our employees. As our dealership footprint continues to grow, we need robust, reliable technology infrastructure to keep our operations running smoothly. We are currently seeking a dedicated, hands-on IT Field Technician to join our technology team and support our locations across the region.
As an IT Field Technician, you will be the boots on the ground for our IT department. You will be responsible for installing, maintaining, and troubleshooting network infrastructure and general IT systems across multiple Dutch Miller Auto Group locations. This is a highly active, hands-on role that goes beyond sitting at a desk—you will run cable, operate lifts, and ensure our dealerships have the connectivity they need to succeed.
Please note: This position requires regular travel, including out-of-state trips and overnight stays, as well as significant physical activity and schedule flexibility.
Key Responsibilities
Network Installation & Maintenance: Deploy, configure, and maintain network infrastructure across all locations. We utilize the full Ubiquiti tech stack, so you will be working extensively with their ecosystem.
Cable Management: Run, pull, terminate, and test network cabling (Cat5e/Cat6, fiber optics) throughout dealership showrooms, offices, and service bays.
Hardware Deployment: Install, configure, and troubleshoot general IT equipment, including desktop PCs, printers, phones, and point-of-sale systems.
Site Surveys & Troubleshooting: Diagnose hardware and network issues on-site and perform necessary repairs or upgrades to minimize downtime.
Vendor Coordination: Work with ISPs and third-party vendors during new site builds or major network upgrades.
Documentation: Maintain accurate records of network layouts, hardware inventory, and cabling pathways for each location.
Travel: Must be willing and able to travel frequently to various dealership locations. This includes out-of-state travel and overnight stays, as needed.
Schedule Flexibility: Overtime may be required to complete after-hours upgrades or minimize business disruption. Participation in on-call schedules is required to handle critical system outages.
Physical Demands: This role is physically demanding. You must be able to:
Routinely lift and move equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
Engage in frequent stooping, kneeling, bending, and crawling in tight spaces (e.g., drop ceilings, server closets).
Working at Heights: Must be entirely comfortable climbing and working on tall ladders.
Heavy Equipment Operation: Experience or willingness to learn how to safely operate mechanical lifts (scissor lifts, boom lifts) for high-elevation cable running and equipment installation.
Previous experience in the IT field, support, network installation, or low-voltage cabling.
Hands-on experience and strong familiarity with IT systems (Ubiquiti technology stack UniFi Network, Protect, etc. is a plus.)
Strong understanding of fundamental networking concepts (LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, switches, routers, Wi-Fi).
Proficiency with hand and power tools required for mounting hardware and running cable.
A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record (company vehicle or mileage reimbursement provided).
Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently in the field.
Strong communication skills to interact professionally with dealership staff and management.
Security Clearance: Must be able to successfully pass a comprehensive security and background check prior to employment.
