What are the responsibilities and job description for the MRP Planner/Buyer position at Duravex?
Duravex is a high-growth manufacturer based in Louisa, Virginia, specializing in sheet metal fabrication, welding, machining, coatings, and turnkey mechanical systems. We provide full system integration and custom equipment design, working closely with customers to refine and optimize their products. Our capabilities also include UL 508A industrial control panels and electrical assemblies as part of broader engineered solutions.
We are scaling rapidly to deliver engineered solutions across critical industries such as defense, data infrastructure, industrial processing, and OEM manufacturing. Our work is organized into six strategic verticals: Engineered Plant Equipment, OEM Equipment, Data Infrastructure, Defense & Secure Facility Components, Exhaust Systems, and Contract Manufacturing.
Role Summary
Duravex is looking for an experienced MRP Planner / Buyer to own the day-to-day planning and procurement of direct materials for our fabrication and assembly operations. This role will use our Made2Manage (Aptian) MRP system to translate customer demand and production plans into detailed material requirements and realistic, finite-capacity schedules.
You will be responsible for keeping the right materials in-house at the right time, balancing cost, lead time, and inventory, while aligning production plans with actual capacity on the floor.
Key Responsibilities
MRP & Finite Capacity Planning
- Run MRP in Made2Manage (Aptean) and convert demand (firm orders and forecast) into planned work orders and purchase requirements.
- Develop and maintain finite-capacity production schedules for key work centers (laser, press brakes, welding, assembly, etc.) based on routings, standard times, and available capacity.
- Identify capacity constraints and work with Manufacturing/Operations to level load, adjust priorities, and sequence work effectively.
- Monitor schedule adherence and update plans daily/weekly based on actual starts/completions, expedites, and customer changes.
Material Planning & Procurement (Direct Materials)
- Plan and buy all direct materials (e.g., raw steel, plate, tube, hardware, fabricated components, purchased assemblies) required to support the production schedule.
- Release purchase orders from MRP, confirm pricing and lead times with suppliers, and maintain accurate delivery dates in Made2Manage.
- Maintain optimal inventory levels and safety stocks to support on-time delivery while minimizing excess and obsolescence.
- Proactively identify shortages and potential stock-outs; drive corrective actions to protect the schedule (expedites, substitutions, alternate sources).
- Ensure correct item setup and data integrity (lead times, order multiples, minimums, lot sizes, preferred vendors) in the MRP system.
Supplier & Internal Coordination
- Serve as primary day-to-day contact for direct material suppliers on orders, confirmations, expediting, and delivery issues.
- Work closely with Manufacturing, Engineering, Quality, and Shipping/Receiving to resolve material discrepancies, late deliveries, and quality issues.
- Support cost reduction and supply continuity efforts by obtaining competitive quotes and identifying alternate or backup suppliers.
Data, Metrics, and Continuous Improvement
- Maintain clean, accurate data in Made2Manage for items, BOMs, routings, and purchase orders as it relates to planning and buying.
- Track and report key metrics such as on-time delivery to production, material availability, planner/buyer shortages, and inventory turns.
- Identify process gaps in planning, scheduling, and purchasing and recommend practical improvements to tighten execution.
Qualifications
- 3 years of experience in a manufacturing environment in a Planner, Scheduler, Buyer, or MRP/ERP-focused role.
- Hands-on experience with an MRP/ERP system (experience with Made2Manage or other Aptian products is a plus).
- Demonstrated experience with finite capacity planning or detailed production scheduling is strongly preferred.
- Solid understanding of bills of material, routings, lead times, safety stock, and basic manufacturing planning concepts (MRP I/II).
- Strong Excel skills and comfort working with data exports, pivots, and basic analysis.
- Proven ability to manage multiple priorities, react to changes in demand, and keep production supplied with materials.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with suppliers and cross-functional internal teams.
Education
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain, Operations Management, Business, Engineering, or related field preferred; equivalent experience will be considered.
- APICS/ASCM or similar certification is a plus but not required.
What We’re Looking For
- A disciplined planner who trusts the system but also understands when to challenge it.
- Someone comfortable on the shop floor talking with supervisors and operators, not just working behind a screen.
- A buyer who can balance cost, lead time, and risk, and who takes ownership of material availability and the production schedule.
